I shot my 1st ever 10pt yesterday on the 2nd day of the season. My archery goals are a Bear, Hog, Elk, North American whitetail slam and a 10 pt buck. Scratch that goal off..
The story is... It was a warm 67 degree day so I only wore 2 t-shirts. So around 6pm I started to get cold and was regretting my decision. So there I sit shivering thinking about packing it in. Around 7pm (15 mins before dark) I started to do my pre-packing up in the tree. I put away my range finder and bino's. I heard a stick break and looked up. coming in straight in front of me about 50 yards away he was coming in. He walked on a line toward me and about 35 yards out he made a left to go to my feeder. He stopped to eat some corn at my feeder and I went to full draw and let an arrow fly. At this point not only was I shivering but I was also nervous knowing it was a 10 pt maybe 11 and I have never shot anything that big before. The shot was either bad or he ducked the string and I spined him and he dropped where he was. I could only move his front legs so he was hoping and dragging himself away with his front legs. So I nocked another arrow and let it fly. Just as I released the arrow he made a big hop and I missed to the right by like 6 inches. I nocked another arrow and he was by a big oak tree and let that one fly. The arrow hit a big branch and shot up in the air over 100 feet. I seen the nockturnal fly high. So i nocked another arrow (the last one in my quiver) at this point he had came out from behind the big oak tree and I judged him to be at around 30 yards since I had put away my range finder I was guessing. I let that arrow fly and it was a hit that finished him. I am guessing he was nearly 300 lbs because normally myself and my best friend get deer out of the woods. This guy took 4 of us.
