Deer are born in the Spring. They are all at X 1/2 in the Fall. So, unless the deer was born in September, they cant be 4 now. Either 3 1/2 or 4 1/2. Sorry, but that just drives me a little crazy when people give their expert opinion on age and it clearly makes no sense. End of rant.
Well if you're going to get pissy over technicalities then if a deer is born in May then he's also not technically another half a year old yet either in September.
The deer is in Minnesota. I was guessing 3 1/2 too. Thank you for confirming my thoughts. It's a public land deer...now I just have to decide if I'm going to pass on it in hopes I get a chance at it next year. The other variable in my decision is my son will be old enough to bow hunt next season and I would love for this deer to be his first. If I had a 300 acre farm, I would pass on it for sure, but I'm still not sure what I will do if given the opportunity...
Just going to throw my opinion out there on this. It may sound silly but I do not want my boys when they start hunting to shoot a big mature buck their fist year. I want them shooting a small buck to build excitement to try to get a bigger one. What if they to shoot a monster their fist year and the feel like they can never achieve that again. Now if a big boy walked past their fist year, of course they shoot it. I may be wrong here, but just something I've thought about.
Thanks for your perspective. This has been a thought of mine as well. I think I'm going to just let fate play its hand. If I get the chance this year, I will probably take this deer...if I don't...maybe next year my son will get a chance.
