I wanted to share a little scouting help. Red Oak vs White Oak - YouTube Sent from my SM-S902L using Tapatalk
I've always been told that the deer like the whites better. Being curious, and teaching my 4year old (at the time, he's 6 now) son the difference, we decided to do a taste test. While they both taste like crap, the whites are definitely much less bitter. If I was a deer, I wouldn't eat the reds until I had to. -D
I've always had a lot of luck hunting white oaks, and have watched many a deer walk through red oaks to get to white oak acorns. I've even seen them ignore apples and corn to go to white oak acorns.
They are great place to be first of season here till they are gone shoot plenty of squirrels also dang tree rats lol
Good video. More hunters should be aware of the difference between the two, it can really make early season a lot more fun/productive. The white oak acorns are low in tannins, unlike the red oak, so they are at the top of a deer's food list at this time. Some of the red oaks in my area of SE PA are dropping right now, I haven't noticed any whites dropping yet, but I'm going to check the ones that I hunt later today. The big white oaks in my area are pretty much every other year for acorn drop. They didn't drop last year, so I'm hoping it's game on this season!
