For all those whitetail hunters out there. What are some of your early season calling tactics? Do you call at all? What is your preferred call?

I grunted in a really nice buck in Nebraska in the first week of September years ago on an Indian reservation. It was in a hay field and not coming my way. I had a grunt tube in my pack and nothing to lose. After making a fool of myself with it, he finally got so curious that he came to 20 yards just to see what was up. I also rattled a buck in that was leaving on October 17th in Iowa. You just never know. When you have nothing to lose, try something.

If you want to whack some yearlings a doe bleat in the early season brings em running.

I might have to give this a shot. Would rather have a mature buck but the freezer is running mighty low!

I've had luck with a fawn in distress call. Does will come looking for the fawn that is in trouble.

yes fawn in distress and I've called a few bucks with light social grunts. Just loud enough for them to barely hear it. Never get carried away if they don't respond I just put it away.

I don't call at all until I see a little frisky activity on my cameras. I then begin light rattling. The week of Halloween, I'm banging antlers pretty aggressively. I've rattled in a lot of bucks, and some really good ones too. I do mix in a few grunts with my rattling by Halloween.

Very light contact grunts have worked for me in the past during the early season. I don't blind call this early however.

My strategy is to take out my call. Go put back in my car. Then leave it there.

Fawn in distress and light grunting have worked in the past. I only use them if I see deer that are out of range.

I generally don't have any issue seeing does so I don't bother with any calling to attract them to me. I won't bring my grunt tubes or rattling antlers to the stand until the first of November usually.

I avoid calling until it's late October and there's a buck out of range.
