As a follow up to the thread about the October Lull I'd like to gather some intel on the bucks we as a group have killed from 10/5 to 10/20. I'd like to keep this to deer 3 years old or above. So if you've killed during this time period please post up! When we get to the end I'll try to analyze all of the data and generate some sort of report on trends.

    Here's the info I'll need:
    • Date of harvest
    • Location of harvest (please list state and nearest large city)
    • Time of harvest (morning or evening)
    • Location of stand - please list one of the following: bedding area, food source, transition area (in between bed and food)
    • Any special notes or info you want to tell about the hunt - what you think the deer was doing when you killed him.
    I'll begin

    • Date of harvest: 10/19/2006
    • Location of harvest: Huntley, IL
    • Time of harvest: Morning
    • Location of stand: Bedding
    • Buck was shot 1/2 our after light as he was making his way back to bed. He came out of a bean field into a small thicket where he was bedding less than 200 yards from a guy standing on his deck in a robe drinking his morning coffee.
    • Date of harvest: 10/18/2015
    • Location of harvest: Stockton, IL
    • Time of harvest: Morning
    • Location of stand - Transition area
    • I was very close to a bedding area that he was making his way back to, but not directly in it. He was shot about 2 or 2.5 hours after sunrise.

    Don't have an awesome photo.
    -10/19/2012
    -Pellyton, Kentucky

    -Transition area
-High pressure system after dry front. Blue bird skies.
    - just climbed in for an afternoon hunt and was lulling in the sun through the cedars.
Heard footsteps. Sounding like a man walking through the woods. Passed up a bedding area and Came in right under my stand before I saw it. Small 8 pt, but very old, hardly had any teeth left.
I know I know, pics or it didn't happen.

As you know this info was posted in the other thread. I added the details you were asking for and omitted the other info. The third one falls one day out of your time frame though.

I think this is a fascinating topic. Unfortunately I fall in the category of not killing a buck in October.

If we can gather up enough helpful information we may be able to change that. :tu:

I can't remember any notable bucks that I've killed during that time period? I did kill my largest ever bow buck on 10/4 though. :)

Yeah that whole morning hunt thing is going to be a problem, I don't do morning hunts.

Go ahead and toss it in here. We may take a look at early October bucks separately. Although I feel weather certainly dictates their patterns as well, they're often still on a pretty regular bed to food pattern for the first few days of the season before they figure out a bunch of guys with pointy sticks are trying to kill them.

We don't need the link, just the pertinent info.

I was in a giant lone tree in the middle of a old farm field thsts now crp. there's small little trees starting to grow that are all torn up so I decided to hang and sit in that lone tree and low and behold he comes out after I rattled. He presented me with a 16 yard shot. The deer seem to gravitate to or near that lone big tree in that crp for some reason . The dnr mowed walking paths for hunters and that's were the trees are growing up from around that lone tree. The deer love using the paths the dnr cut out here

    - 10/4/1996 (last quarter moon phase)
    - Detroit Lakes, MN
    - Around 7:00 PM from what I remember
    - Field edge of alfalfa
    - I had seen this buck from a distance through binochs during the summer months feeding at the same field I ended up killing him. He always had another 8 pointer with him that was probably around 130". I passed on an opportunity at the 8 before getting a shot at the 10.

came in to a grunt and screwing around w/ one of those doe Mah-ma calls.. never thought it would work.
Was hunting a corner pocket thicket below a ridge abutting a green field. Buck busted out of the thick cover on the ridge and came running right to the thicket in front of me. Shot at 20 yards.

    •Date of harvest...10/20/2014
    •Location of harvest...Rochester, IN
    •Time of harvest...7:00PM
•Location of stand ...Food source. I was in a tripod at the point of a thin peninsula of woods jutting out into a fresh cut corn field.
•Any special notes or info you want to tell about the hunt - The deer was still on a normal feeding pattern. I saw over 40 deer that evening. He came out right at dark, and I was able to decoy him in after getting his attention with a few aggressive grunts and a couple snort wheezes. The biggest factor was the property did not have any hunting pressure. The odd thing is that particular day had everything wrong for good deer movement. it was 10 degrees above normal, barometer was 29.8, SW wind. But the deer were everywhere that night. I was hunting the tripod as an observation stand...didn't plan on seeing much.

With the act of taking my mediocre thread and making it this awesome thread, my love for Justin just grew exponentially. :dan: I will have to check all my tags at home to see if I've killed anything in that range. I know I killed a buck on October 25th which is out of the range we're looking for but I can't remember the others.
