Is there a kind of arrow tip that won't penetrate? If so what are they called?

Are you talking about small game heads? Those are about the only ones that i can think of that are designed to reduce penetration.

No just kind of a blank end. Just had a idea that I could use them for and just wanted to know if there actually was a tip like that

Should they bounce off a tree?

Yes but if you're too close it could damage your arrow.

I suspect any hit on a tree would damage if not destroy a carbon shaft at modern bow velocities. I thought about it for squirrel hunting but decided to only shoot squirrels on the ground

I have a older bow. It is a Bear Whitetail 2 with about a 70 pound draw weight and 30 inch draw length but shoot a 31 inch arrow that is about 430 grains

In order to save some money and not buying targets I thought about just making a spot on a tree as my target. Then with blunt tips you could put just a little bit of paint on the end and it would hopefully leave a small did where I hit. Do you think it would work?

Just go online and buy blunt tips that are used for video/virtual shoots and use your current targets. A bag target would probably work best for little to no penetration with a blunt. I would not shoot at trees and expect to use your arrows very long

You would save more money by buying a $25 target than breaking arrows on trees everyday.

Consensus says it's not a good idea. That being said I used to stump shoot in the summer months in the wood lot. Helped with guessing ranges but it was always at stumps or dead falls that were half rotten. I did ruin an arrow or two. You can get a good Morrell FP target fairly cheap. I don't recommend cheap $20 targets made from Styro foam, you'll regret it. There has been mentioned on here of buying a compressed straw bail from TSC. If thats still to much money, then if you live in a rural area you should be able to find a square bail or two some where for a couple bucks. They work pretty well. Round bails work also although i have lost an arrow before hitting a soft spot in it.
Keep after it brother it'll all come together.

Very bad idea - You will ruin your arrows on the first shot shooting at trees.

Buy a cheap target and be done with it.

I also used to stump shoot a lot in my trad days, and as you said, you can't shoot into healthy trees or freshly cut stumps unless you enjoy breaking arrows lol. Even his old Bear Whitetail 2 will do a number on his arrows shooting trees in his yard.
