Hey all, I am new here. My father-in-law just gave me this bow. He has had it for a long time, but doesn't use it anymore. I would like to play around with it and actually get some legit practice in, so I need to restring it and adjust some sites and such. I do not know what kind of bow it is because there are literally no words on the bow at all. I need to get the correct string, but without knowing the bow, getting the string gets difficult. Can anyone identify this for me? This is the only picture I have right now, but can take more once I get home.

There were a few manufacturers that made a bow similar to that. What does the stickers say. Bear made some, Jennings, PSE and a few others so its hard to tell. Looks mostly like a Bonnie Bowman but can't find any clear pictures to be sure.

My honest opinion would be that you don't want to spend much money fixing up a bow that is pushing 40 years old. Having a bow fail is serious business.

Bad thing is the crack you do hear, is the limb bouncing off your head.;)

Yup. Shelve it. You can get a good 8-12 year old bow on eBay for $120.
I have a Diamond Justice that I bought on eBay cheap that shoots like a dream, feels like 12 pounds at full draw when the pull is 70. You can read reviews of old bows at compoundbowchoice.com I think it is.

looks like an old bear whitetail II can't forget all those strings and pulleys going all over. I see it has those energy wheels on it. it is funny seeing Mathews acting like they invented it. it is actually old technology. it is fun shooting all those vintage bows. brings back memories for sure. gotta have some gamegetterII aluminum arrows tipped with satellite broadheads to complete the package. love it!!!!

Sorry TC, not a Whitetail II.....that was my first bow. I remember a Browning that looked very similar in a store during the late 70's or early 80's. I would say Browning.

after looking at it again. montec may be right? the riser arcs out to far for a bear. brownings did kind of look like that.

I may get a newer bow, but let me ask you this. If it was used for a hunting season and then put away and not really used again, does it still wear out. I know somethings that will deteriorate with age, no matter what. Is this the same situation, or could it be fine if it was stored properly?

Probably even more dangerous just sitting, unless it was sitting in the perfect temperature and moisture controlled environment. Before I ever tried to shoot it, I would take it to a good bow shop and have them go over it.

Doesn't look like anything I shot back in the late 70s or later. I wouldn't believe it's a Bear, Martin, or Browning. Maybe PSE or Jennings. I never had a chance to mess with any Jennings and didn't shoot PSE till the 90s. It looks older than that so could be. JMO though.

I'd take the advice offered here and shelve it, 40 years old is 40 years old. Never mind usage it's a matter of age degradation.
