I know this sounds silly to you guys, but I have a problem with deer getting into my orchard and tearing up my small apple trees. I need something that I can lay on the ground that will keep deer from coming around. Keep them a long way from my trees. I have heard that laying a bar of soap on the ground will keep them away and spreading human hair is supposed to do the same thing. Have not tried these methods yet, but I thought I would ask here before wasting a lot of my time with the trial and error method. Anyone out there that can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Boxcarman
I have a Hoyt that dispenses Deer deterring sticks that guarantees the deer it is focused on will not return. Will Travel for food. Ive never heard of the soap trick but the hair thing is only a temporary deterrent when it works. You would need an endless supply of hair and often. Not worth the trouble. Probably the best but by far the most expensive is a game proof fence. As long as there is a way in to food that they want. They will get to it.
I also use throw deer deterrent sticks with a Hoyt. I second an open invitation, no charge for my deer removal services. Check out Watch Deer Hunting Videos. Free. GrowingDeer.tv there is a product that Dr. Grant Woods uses to keep deer from damaging young trees. It may work for you.
Electric fence works great. You just have to keep it maintained and popping hot 24/7 or they will figure it out and once they do, it's over.
Electric fence alone wont do it unless you have strands from ground to 6 feet high about every foot to foot and a half or so in my opinion.
I'm on a vermin control permit for a Apple orchid here in MD. You would think it would be gold but there deer just come after dark now around the hours I can legal enforce the permit (hunt). An electric fence alone is not enough, deer's highly insulative coat means they can some times escape contact with out a bite from the 10,000 volt charge. We found a electric fence with strips if foil with peanut butter on them causes the to sniff/lick the strip and they get zapped. After a couple of weeks the local population is trained but you need to periodically remind them with, the pb trick. We also continue with the hunting pressure as this keeps the deer on edge and seems to stop them from just jumping the fence. Pressured Deer always have an exit strategy they don't go into small areas with out a good exit plan. When we back off the hunting pressure they seem to jump the fence more often as they are relaxed. Over the years treis: soap perfume human/dog hair loud rock music loud country music (keeps me away) hanging ropes "Deer Away" spray Liquid Fence motion activate lights The only thing that works (15 years in a row now) is an electric fence. I use the rope kind, not the high tension wire. They make 120v AC & 12v DC fencers for about $75.
Motion activated solar powered strobe lights. They flicker and change patterns. You will need to move every week or so because they will eventually get used to. Even hung high I've seen them turn deer in a 180.
I know some grape orchards here in indiana use a propane canon that goes off every so often to keep deer out .very effective
