Some of you may remember during middle of November I was having alot of encounters with a buck I've been chasing for last two years. Saw him couple times in stand but never got chance at a shot. First shotgun season rolled around and didn't know if he made it unscathed but all doubts were put to rest when saw him the following Monday night after gun season chasing does. Go to that weekend and saw him two or three sits in a row but still no shot. Skipped that Sunday morning and when checked cams realized that was mistake ha. That would of been maybe 20 yard shot pretty much perfect broadside as my stand is pretty close to that camera. The next weekend rolls around which is 2nd shotgun season and my buddy who's farm I hunt ended up taking the buck and a doe on the 2nd day of gun season. Well now we got him back and he's up on the wall. First mount my buddy as ever got and I'd say it turned out pretty good. But thought I'd share since kept talking bout it on here and now there's a end to the story. We never did measure him but the kid that did the mount said he tapped him and scored right around 170 and 162ish with deductions. Either way it's a pretty nice deer and pretty sure biggest I've hunted around personally.
Great deer and a great story but in all honesty, and I know I'll catch some flack for this, but the mount is pretty bad. I've had conversations with a lot of people over the years who never seem to be honest when it comes to feedback on mounts, which has always confused me. We don't hesitate to comment if we think someone took a bad shot or went after an animal too soon, but we won't give our honest opinion of a deer mount. I know if I killed a 170" and it came back from the taxi like that we'd be exchanging some words and I'd be looking elsewhere to get my mounts done. I guess if your friend is happy with it that's all that matters. Kudos to him - that's bigger than anything I've ever killed.
Just curious as to what your meaning? Not gonna bother me or probably just more curious on things to look for. Just to point out the bad spots around the neck are from a log chain that got put around it to drag out. Edit: One of the things I notice now that I keep looking at pics, the neck itself seems a little too long and slender.
The biggest things to look for are always the eyes and the nose. IMO those are the areas that separate a good mount from a bad one. A good mount is one that looks like a real, live animal. Not one that looks "stuffed". Look at the difference between these two side by side. This may help you see all of the differences.
I can definitely see that, I noticed the nose being way too shiny when I went and saw it, but didn't really think bout it much or was real bothered bout it. There was a spot on the eyes noticed too that kinda stood out if you look close. The tear ducts, I guess, are kinda odd. They seem "opened" up and almost like a hole near front of eye. Either way thanks for explaining it.
Ha yep sure did, all the way across field lol. I woulda never did it but he doesn't worry too much bout that kinda stuff.
Great buck!!!! but I think the kid doesn't know how to score because it had way more than 8" of deductions but nets are for fishing anyway
Nice buck but I would take the deer to a new Taxi and get it done right. There is a lot more wrong then right some people do take it as an insult if you point out what's wrong with their trophy.
Yea idk like said that's just what got told when see him out in town after got dropped off. Don't think he's been doin it very long, we did the concrete work for his shop last summer or late spring.
Yea I doubt he'd ever take it somewhere else. Wasn't even goin to get it mounted but kinda talked him into it ha. He doesn't really care to much either way and seems happy with it.
It also almost looks like a different cape. The throat patch looks different than the one in the kill pic. But it could be the angle.
At first look I thought it was a older mount from lets say 30 years ago. I have to agree with JZ on this one.
Like mentioned earlier, you can still see the markings left from where got drug out. So I think it's the same, but the more I look at it something's are definitely becoming more noticable. I didn't really get chance to look it over real good just snapped few pics, but I'll have to get better look this weekend.
I would have pulled that ol boy out by hand, out of breath, but as happy as can be. Chains around the neck? I guess you live and you learn.
