Yeah right! I cannot tell you how many times I've stopped in the woods and said to myself, "now that would be a great spot" and only to look up and see a decrepit old wooden treestand. They knew what they were doing and I would have loved to have learned from one of them growing up.
Cool pic! I've encountered a couple of those old wooden stands as well. It really makes you wonder who may have been hunting the area back in the day. I love old stuff like that.
It's always fun to stand there and imagine what they were seeing while they were in that stand. Blessings........Pastorjim
My first tree stands were planks of 2 x 12's that had a "v" notch cut in each end and then got jammed in between a couple of tree trunks. I shot my first deer with a bow while standing on a limb in a pine tree and leaning against the trunk. If I wanted to get really fancy, I would carry along a hammer and a couple of nails and make it "permanent". lol Some of those stands you find are not as old as you think.
I killed my first deer in a widow maker of a wooden treestand. My friends dad told me to climb it in the dark and I cringed all the way up! I also killed a few deer out of pine trees sitting on nothing but a limb. Haha.
My Dad made some of those back in the day and I can remember being really young getting in them with him in the dark. We both kind of laugh and cringe thinking back.
Don't put all "Old Timers" in the same category. I see plenty of "young uns" doing stupid stuff like that.
Im assuming hes talking about wooden tree stands. Which, we all know arnt safe. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I killed a lot of deer just standing on the limbs of some big old oak trees in Jackson Co. Michigan. A kid of the 80's with no money to buy the "new" hang on's back then. You had to do what you had to do! LOL Surprised I didn't get hurt, but along with bowhunting in the eastern U.P. with my college buddies, it was the best times for bowhunting!
My first buck I shot was out of a similar unsafe fallen down rotten board stand. Was plenty proud of the deer, not so much of the stand.
I remember I was about 11 or 12. I went to hunt this old wood stand that overlooked a draw that dumped out into a winter wheat field. It was a sure kill spot. I was so excited that my uncle let me go out by myself. I started climbing the half rotten 2x4's nailed to the tree. As I was climbing a couple of them fell off. I knew it would be dang near impossible for me to get down but I only had one thing on my mind......there was gonna be deer funneling my way real soon to feed in that winter wheat. I ended up killing a nice doe and had to wait for my uncle and gpa to come get me down lol. Some of the stuff that happened back then would get adults convicted of child endangerment. But somehow we came out unscathed!
