Its been a while since I posted much. My son's birthday was last friday. He's been asking for a new bow as the one he started with he grew out of and it was pretty much a cheapy "lets try first to see if you like it". Anyway, for his birthday I got him a new Diamond Atomic bow. Great adjustability and the little bow looks sweet. After initial setup and some instruction, we set off for the backyard to see how it shoots. Draw length needs shortened a bit more, but he absolutely loved it and shot it pretty well at 15 yards. One of the proudest moments of being dad for me yet!
I remember my dad felt the same way when i got my first i just hope I can have the same feeling with my first!
this was my sons first year out it was exciting to have him make his first judgement call to let one pass at seven yards not once but three times lol question asked still not big enuff Oman makes one proud he could do that. And his first deer retrieval with uncle jay.
Good stuff guys. You see pictures of folks with their kids hunting and honestly, it doesn't hit home until you have your own doing it too. My son was diagnosed with ADHD a couple of years ago and struggled with lots of things, still does in terms of attention span etc. He's been on a very low dose of meds to help in school and he's be doing awesome there. The really neat thing is that when I get him outside shooting his bow... total focus. I'm really hoping this will lead to some type of therapy for him to help him learn how to focus and concentrate and eventually get him off the meds. Its just neat to see him so focused and enjoying shooting.
Makes me sad and regretful, my daughter had interest in bow hunting but once she started college she never had time. My son had no interest in shooting a bow and sitting in a tree. I did coach football and basketball with him but he hated archery, he had a gym teacher that was really into archery in the schools and had the kids shooting, my son wanted to play sports instead of shooting guess that exposure to archery backfired. At least both kids love eating venison.
You know buddy, one thing I promised myself was that I wouldn't push hunting/archery on to my kids. I have a daughter who is a year behind him and she has shown some interest too. But it could be the sibling rivalry thing. If they try it and love it, great, if not and they find something else they love to do, great. Obviously I hope they love it and want to spend time doing it with me, but I also want them to do what makes them happiest. The way I look at it is if its archery, great, if its sports or some other constructive hobby, awesome. As long as its something that keeps them off drugs and booze. As a dad, it scares the hell out of me to see all these teenagers around here wrapped up in all sorts of really bad stuff. I pray everyday my kids don't end up like that.
I bought my son a Lil' Scout and he loves shooting. He is only 4 but can hit the foam youth target at about 5 yds. He is excited for the weather to get better so we can shoot outside. At 4 years old I hope he sticks with the excitement and enthusiasm.
That's very cool man. We don't have kids but any of our nieces and nephews that show an interest I buy a bow and get them into archery. Only one still shoots, the rest lost interest.
