How much do you value a sanctuary?

I haven't seen anything mentioned about this and it seems to be blowing up over on OL. Takes some serious marbles to put this out there, I'll commend him on that. But that's where I'll stop.

Do you value a sanctuary to the point of not looking for a wounded buck?

No I do not. If it is a buck I thought enough of to shoot, I am going to exhaust all my means to find him. I can understand why some wouldn't. If it is a buck that someone doesn't care to find if they shoot, why shoot him in the first place? I understand the whole"culling" aspect, but why chance it!

 

If I have just shot an animal, I am going to do whatever and go wherever I need to, to recover that animal. Not only just for the meat, but out of respect for that animal.

 

Chased the deer for 3 years and passed a 12yd shot to give his son a chance to shoot it... The son shoots it but they decide not to follow because of a sanctuary.

That makes ZERO sense.

If you shoot an animal you do everything in your power to find that thing. Of all things... A sanctuary should not be the reason you stop looking for that animal.

 

I would plow into a sanctuary with a tank if I had to if it meant recovering something I shot. One time isn't going to hurt anyway. You think predators don't go into sanctuaries? As long as it wasn't a common occurence they would be back in there in no time.

 

The author is wrong on about three levels, however I get the feeling this is more of a sensationalism piece than anything. Outdoor Life just lost a little credibility, but I will keep reading.

Going in to recover isn't going to spoil the sanctuary. Noise and movement will move any deer out as you track in but they will return.

 

I've never hunted a place big enough to have a sanctuary.

 

Me too, especially when he said the buck had broken off part of his right beam, and the buck in the pic shows a broken left main beam. Hmmm

 

The commercialization of hunting has bred a lot of freaking idiots. He may be the new benchmark. I scour my sanctuaries for ANY deer that is hit.

Too bad for the kid that his dad is a tool.

We have a sanctuary on our hunting grounds that now one goes into except for 2 reasons.

1. A one time walk through when the snow melts.
2.If a blood trail takes us there.

 

I hunt the EDGE of this thicket, which I know they use as a sanctuary. I have gone in there on 3 occasions in 13 years, each time was to retrieve my deer. I catch them coming out in the evening.

 

to not pursue a deer on property you can enter makes no sense. I echo the bull**** mentioned above and see no redeeming qualities in this article.

 

I missed a buck this year in my absolute best bedding area "sanctuary". I tore through that place looking for any signs that I may have hit that buck. I effectively ruined that spot for the last 4-5 days of the rut. A person is a complete moron if they won't tread into a sanctuary to look for a deer they may have wounded or killed.

 

I would look anywhere (legally) for a wounded buck.

 

Agreed. I don't squeeze the trigger often enough to just give up. I know there are guys out there that tend to quit too easily...but this seems ridiculous.

 

A shot deer should be pursued, regardless of where it goes..... I've tracked deer into Mammoth Cave, and brought them out. I dread the day I shoot a deer that goes on neighboring property and the neighbor says no.... That would get dicey.

I'm glad people over on OL are calling him out, but looking at some of his comments makes me believe this guy didn't learn anything from this.

My thoughts are there's nothing that would keep me from going through a sanctuary in search of a deer. Hell, I've grid searched our sanctuary when the neighbor wounded a deer.
