I'm updating my gear and need some help....I'm looking at first lite and Sitka but am not limiting myself to those brands....what I would like to know is everyone's full layering system with item names (ie sitka fanatic jacket...ect)....I'm trying to lose bulk and am hoping I can get enough warmth with 4 good layers but i do seem to get cold quicker than some and am wondering if it's even possible...I'm a sit still for long hours hunter most of the time....any help is appreciated Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
Under Armor base layers Cabelas polar tech over that Game hide no chill fleece over that Game hide grid lock suit over that I'm warm down into the low 20's just with those 4 layers
I hunted in temps into the 20's this year using this system. - ScentLok Thermal BaseSlayers - Heavy weight Merino wool mid layer - Milwaukee electric heated hoodie - ScentLok Full Season Velocity Jacket If there's anything I'd change I may considering ditching one of the two base layers in favor of a packable down vest of some sort. I also run my hoodie on Low or Medium most of the time. The battery doesn't last super long so I typically wait until I just start to get cold and then click it on. When temps get really, really cold and nasty I'd consider changing the outer layer to something that's wind & water proof.
Depending on how cold it is and what setting you have it on anywhere from 2-4 hours in my experience. It's worked well for me on those really cold morning hunts because I'm usually pretty toasty from the walk in/camera setup for the first hour or two. About the time I start to feel a twinge of cold I click it on Medium and I'm typically good until I'm done for the morning. I purchased a few extra batteries on Amazon so I'll swap it out before the afternoon hunt and be ready to go again. IMO it's one of the best investments I've made for cold weather hunting in a long time. It uses the Milwaukee M12 battery so if you have any of their cordless tools you can get dual use out of the extra batteries during the off season.
I've actually been looking into that brand of heated hoodie, but never heard any reviews on it. I'm sold now lol. I'm going to pick one up for next season.
Under Armour Cold Gear Base 3.0 Rocky Fleece (don't remember exact name) Milwaukee Heated vest Sportsmans guide Fleece sweater (Heavy duty sweater with wind shear) Cabelas MTO50 Jacket
I cannot help with layering - but I must say I have a heated vest from Cabelas that has a rechargeable battery. It lasts 6-8 hours on low and around 4 on medium. Great investment. They make a jacket, too. I'm going to look into that next.
This is my cold weather system. Minus33 silk Base Layer Merino Wool Minus33 Expedition Weight Merino mid layer Cabelas Wool Pull over Military Fatigue sweater (probably the warmest thing I have ever owned, too hot to walk into stand in) Sitka Fanatic Jacket Sitka Stratus pants Sitka Incinerator Hat Two pairs of Pure Wool socks Lacrosse Alpha Burly 800 boots This is comfortable for me down to the low 20's, high teens. If its brutally cold and windy and I need just a tad extra, here is a trick I picked up years ago. Get one of those replaceable heat wraps from your local drug store or Wal Mart. Its the kind that you can replace the heat packs in. They're usually about $4. I but a couple so I have a spare. Take two of the big body sized warmers, throw into the pouches on the wrap and once in your stand, wrap it around your waist, placing the heat packs on your kidneys. Could probably handle temps into the single digits easily.
If you hunt from one spot without much moving around, i'd suggest the UA extreme cold base layer (their old 5.0 base line) I was outside the other morning in just a base loading up the truck in mid 20 degree weather and was not cold doing it! If you stalk or do considerable movement while hunting their infrared line will roast you... Lots of good options for mid layer and out layer if you so choose, but I did not need a mid layer with the UA base and their gun powder pants and jacket a few morning back - mid 20's temps wind at 25 knots... was sweating Do not use their infrared line for still, treestand, blind hunting.. Wasn't meant for that, and you won't be very warm.
I'm very happy with my layers smartwool nts merino wool base-layer 240 wt Sitka traverse zip T ive combined those 2 layers with my fanatic jacket and have felt fine in the high 20's
-True timber silver tec base layers -Either Under Armour 3.0 or Cabelas Polar tec ecwcs hoodie and pants (depending on how cold) -under armour storm hoodie -Cabelas Dryplus bibs and 4 in 1 parka. -LaCrosse Ice King Pac boots With this system and hothands on the back of my neck and wrists (depending on what release I use) I'm good down to zero for 6-8 hrs.
Thanks for the info guys...I'm pleased to see 3 or 4 layers for most people as that is what I'm trying to do...I really have thought about the heated vest from cabelas or the millwakie heated hoodie...sounds like a good investment once I figure out which one I want...I'll be looking hard here after Christmas for some deals and see what I can come up with Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
