Alright,I'm thinking of going with rage next year. My bow is only advertised at 310fps,so is that fast enough? I will likely be shooting 60# next fall.
Definitely fast enough. Go with Rage Hypodermic, ive shot through both shoulders at 47 yards with hypodermics!
310fps is at IBO...although there are a lot of factors and it is very hard to actually make IBO, pulling 60lbs with a decent arrow will prob put you at 270-280. Either way, I love, trust and truly believe that you will be fine shooting a Rage broadhead at that spee; I love them. The most important thing to remember when shooting either a mechanical or fixed blade is that you 'wait for the shot.' In other words, don't take marginal shots and blame it on the head because you didn't kill/find it. "Practice how you play," as my dad says.
Really doesn't matter what broadhead you are using if you always make good shots. Large expandables sacrifice penetration for cutting diameter. There are shots that cutting diameter is more important than penetration and there are shots where penetration is more important. I have been 100% successful in recovering the deer I have shot with a rage, but I have not stick one in the should joint either.
Speed does not matter as much as arrow weight. What arrow do you plan on using? Also do not expect a Rage or any mechanical to go thru both of a deer's shoulders at 47 yards, it's possible but not probable.
Hypodermics! Shot through shoulder this year and deer went 80 yards. This doesn't mean you can take unethical shots but the hypodermics saved my butt on my buck this year. Super sharp.
Skywalker is dead on and Sota is leading you down the right road. I use Rage Hypodermics on a 350 spine at 64# . This year, I have taken a buck, doe and three large pigs. Complete pass through on both deer and anywhere from 8-14' penetration on the pigs. None have made it past 50 yards after the shot. Aim small, miss small.
I shot them on a hoyt charger shooting 60# last year and got a pass through, granted the IBO on that is 325 but you should be good. You will sacrifice a little penetration for the extra cutting diameter but if you go with a little heavier arrow you can pick up a little penetration
Rage hypodermic shoot great. I did have issues with the old rage with the rubber band. But the Rage hypodermics with the plastic collar are great.
As has been said, shot placement is the most important factor in this whole discussion. Most any of todays broadheads will get the job done if the arrow is put in the right place. Get your bow tuned and practice shooting from every angle that you can imagine and you should be fine.
Its so true. I did use a rage 2blade and shot a nice 100inch 7 point in the liver and ran 200yds back in 2013. shot placement is mainly the truth factor of being successful in harvesting a nice deer for the season. a small fixed head through the lungs will get a deer running 80yds like a rage.
I will never regret shooting a 475 grain arrow, Rage are not made for bone but with a hard hitting arrow it doesn't have to be a disaster if you do hit some shoulder.
