What is the highest wind you feel safe in a tree?

How high of wind until you don't feel safe in a tree anymore?

 

Depends on the tree and the type of wind. Gusting winds here in Kansas can be pretty crazy. I'd say anything over 20-25 is pretty dicey. It's not so much a safety thing as it is making a ethical shot. It can be pretty difficult to make a good shot between the tree, me, and the bow moving around.

 

I've sat in gust winds of 30 MPH and it's not as fun as it sounds. You lose you hat every time you look upwind, and let's not talk about peeing out of the stand. GEEES! I still hunt in high winds, but only because I have limited opportunities to hunt. I would suggest you do what I do and practice shooting from the roof of a cab on a truck or whatnot while it is driving 30 MPH. Nor be sure to fasten yourself in real good. (do not tie off to the antenna). If you always shot standing up, then try standing up on the cab of the truck while you shoot. be sure the person driving is of age to drive and is properly covered with insurance.

Friday has winds of 15-25 with gusts to 30mph and normally I would hunt a blind in those winds. But it is an 18 deg temp drop that day during the rut and I don't want to be stuck in a blind with that kind of front moving through

Yeah some tree sets wouldn't take much more than 15 to feel uneasy...others much more. I shot a buck in 2011 in 30 mph gusts....just 15 minutes earlier I'd debated getting down due to having to constantly hold the tree or stand with a hand....then a doe walked out...then him :D

What kind of tree is it? How big?

 

Don't know. LOL I have a funnel picked out in thick area that I think they will using. Ill be going in with the climber on my back and picking a tree. It will prob be an ash or soft maple.

 

Yep all depends on the set, but pretty used to hunting high wind... it is KS after all lol

 

I don't think you should worry about it. Just pick a bigger tree to reduce sea sickness.

Just pick a tree that's not as tall as the rest of the trees around it and you should be ok unless your in a tornado. That's assuming your in the timber and not on the edge. I have some stands that are in some pretty small trees and you can really get to rocking in those on windy days. I have others that I hardly even notice moving.

 

Just have Matt hold you still while in the tree.

This is in the middle of a big block of timber.

 

You should be good then with a little shorter tree. The rest of the trees on the edges should knock down the wind to nothing more than a stiff breeze. Should be good to go.

The nearest open field is over 1.5 miles from the wind direction.
