So for now I am shooting 380 grain arrows at 270 FPS for around 60 ft-lb of KE. I have a 60lb 27" draw Carbon Knight. Will that be sufficient or do I need to load a 50 or 100 grain insert and deal with a slightly slower arrow? I want to shoot 125 grain Hypo's.

    Thanks in advance.

IMO that setup should be fine for whitetail hunting. I wouldn't expect to blast through any shoulder blades but if you hit them right you'll have no problem with a quick, clean recovery.

I was shooting a 381 grain arrow 2 years ago, had 2 pass throughs with Grim Reaper 1-3/4" razor tips. About the same speed as yours. I have since added 20 grains and swithced to a 2 blade fixed blade.

I agree you shouldn't have any issues shooting that setup. I would shoot fixed blade heads tho. Just my opinion

I agree. Shoot fixed blades if you are shooting low KE.

    60 is not low KE.

You will be fine with those heads.

I tried to do some guestimation on what a bigger insert would do to my speed, Ke and Momentum, and if I add the 100 grain insert I would have a 460 grain arrow and I assume 260 fps which puts me at 70 ft-lb of Ke 19% FOC and a momemtun increase from .45 to .54 lb.ft.-sec

using this http://www.tuffhead.com/education/formulas_momentum.html and goldtips calcs...

that seems like a big increase, but I'm not sure how much speed Ill loose. It appears I didn't go about purchasing arrows the best way. And I wish I got the 70lb bow now...

I would switch to a fixed blade head like a muzzy but other than that your set up is fine.

If you add 100 grains to your arrow it's going to slow it down WAY more than 10 fps. Lol.

The general rule of thumb is 1 fps for every 3 grains. So 100 grs with be 33.3 fps but probably a tad less because heavier is usually a little more efficient. Is say around 240 FPS is pretty close. That is if your 270fps is chronographed not calculated

Me personally, I don't believe that's necessary. You will be fine with your setup as it is. Just don't hug the shoulder, but that being said, there's not many bows that can blow thru that shoulder knuckle when hit

OK. The 270 fps was measured. I guess I was still trying to convince myself that I need the heavy inserts. Thinking rationally the speed drop should be a lot more than 10 fps. I will keep practicing and get my aim as accurate as possible by October and any think I do with my arrows wont help if I make a bad shot.

    Thanks again guys!

Back from the dead. I have the ability to swap limbs from 60lbs to 70lbs. Is it worth pursuing? Mostly I am wondering if its safe to say I'll need new arrows right out of the box? I'm shooting 400 Gold Tip Primos at 27.75"

I would stay with what you have. Nothing wrong with your setup. I hunt with a Halon at 52 pounds, 27" draw length using 392 grain Easton axis arrows. The last deer I shot blew right through both lungs and cut the top off the heart. That was with a fixed blade broadhead though (NAP Thunderhead). I use to worry about my setup a lot but not so much anymore. Hit your spot and the deer will be dead. This year i'm switching back to fixed blades and going with a Slick Trick.

No, you're going to need a stiffer shafted arrow. For Gold Tip you will need 340 or 300, especially if you are still using a 125 grain expandable broadhead. Even if you stay with the 60lb limbs I'd still jump to at least the 340s.

I shot the Carbon Knight for the first 2.5 years deer hunting at 26.5 draw and 55lbs. Arrows were 370 grain. Shot fixed Montec's and mechanical NAP Kill Zones. Not sure what my KE was but I had good penetration and recovered both deer I shot. Never got pass thru's but it's probably because I hit ribs on entry and exit with both bucks.

You should be fine with your current set up.

did some testing with arrow weights a while back and measured on a chronograph lost 24 FPS when going from 400 to 497 grain arrows with a 50# bow. so 10 FPS is way light. if estimating I'd go with the 3 FPS per 10 grains to be safe.

I honestly wouldn't stick with what you have. It says right on Gold Tips website what arrow you need and you're way off. You will lose accuracy and KE energy with your current setup resulting in wounded animals. You need to buy stiffer arrows or lower your draw weight.
