We got a decent snow out here in Missouri and I was curious to know if 5-7 inches of snow is too much to go look for some antler sheds? Really wanted to try it out and see what I could find Thanks
Just read on fb that they use the snow to find and take note of the heavy trails. Then go back to those spots after the snow melts to find sheds.
We finally started to melt here in PA and I was planning on going out today to check cams and look for sheds. Then BOOM another 5-7 today. Looks like I"ll try next weekend.
depends if they dropped before or after the snow hit and if it was all at once or not. I dont like snow for 2 reasons: 1. The animals can smell them through the snow and eat them. 2. its much harder to walk when its crunchy old snow.
I would definitely go and scout to see where they're moving a lot to increase your chances next time your out
Well I didnt uncover any sheds, however I did find a bedding area and some heavy tracks....as well as turkey tracks!
I say look. A walk through the woods is always a good idea whether you find sheds or not. Do you guys think deer are smart enough to lay back down in the same bed night after night? (lack of snow beneath them keeps them warmer)
They often have numerous different places they bed, especially seasonally; closer to food, cover, pressure, etc... but to answer your question, yes, I think they're smart enough but then again, it wouldn't take them long to thaw snow if they decided to lay down elsewhere
I live in central PA and we haven't been close to melting snow in two months. Its been horrible here. I will be surprised if I get into the woods to shed hunt until closer to the end of the month. Turkey season here might actually be decent for sheds with all the snow covering anything thats been dropped.
I'm right there with you. Ice on roofs is horrible. Looking at a warm up tomorrow and Wednesday (with rain mix) - then back down again. Ugh. If we have had any sheds - they're frozen under the current fresh layer of snow.
Here in central NY, we have similar conditions. Very deep snow, no melt since December, and temperatures were below zero for much of February. No doubt it's been a tough winter for the herd.
well, thank you for the pity party. sorry I was unable to attend I was plowing my freakin driveway again. if it snows one more time I now have to hire an excavator to come and push it back for me. I have never been out of room to pile snow. I think that all the sheds are going to be buried til april.
We had to do that up here at our fire hall. We had so much snow we could no longer turn our trucks around to back in. It's a large parking lot, so quite surprising. From your username, do you race?
The snow pack this year in southern maine has been ridiculous! We've also got about 4' on the ground here too. Since Christmas we have had 3 days above freezing.. Come on spring!
