I keep going back and forth between the two and what I will be shooting next year. Currently I am shooting expandables but there is the chance something may fail. What do you shoot and what is your reasoning to shoot that over the other.
Never will I go back to expandable heads... First is they absorb energy when they open. Second, there's always the risk of mechanical failure (Although I don't believe I know anyone that it's happened to. I believe its highly unlikely, but still possible). Third and largest is when I was turkey hunting I had an expandable kick sideways on impact and slingshot away from the bird opened once... just like skipping a dadgum rock! The shot was a little off and the angle was sharp, but if it had been fixed it still would have penetrated and I wouldn't have gone home empty handed that day... if that had been a deer I would have been livid.
Hoyt, Matthews, Bear, Elite, Bowtech, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Chocolate, Vanilla, Red, Green, Warm, Cold....
Yes I relize everyone is going to have there own opinon on this subject. Some people may blame shot on the head or whatever case may be but I just want to know how many people shoot what.
Thats what I run through my head and I also had a similar experince a few years ago on a turkey. But then I also rrun through my head that lets say I put a less then perfect shot on a animal. I am going to want the big hole to hopefully open things up more
Can I be like Bo Jackson and say both? Prefer solids for deer, hogs, bear, elk.... Like a big expandable for turkeys.
Gonna give turkeys a go this spring some, never done it before and love fixed heads but curious Heck, what head do you switch to in spring?
Wonder how many people who say "a mechanical could fail" have a drop-away rest on their bows. Expandable all day until it does me wrong.
I've had really good luck with the NAP Spitfire Gobble Getters. The blunt point really is hard hitting and really transfers a lot more energy to the bird rather then just blowing right through it. Can really hear the THAAAAWACK!!! Often you will get a complete pass through but the arrow will just be laying on the ground right behind the bird. More recently (last couple years) I've been using the Killzones. And then I always like to have a couple Magnus Bullhead's in the quiver as there is something cool about cutting heads off! If I were to buy new I would buy the biggest expandable available from a reputable manufacturer. I start with a blank sight tape every spring so i can sight in both for an expandable and bull head. I am excited about HHA King Pin sight this year. Be nice just to just be able to throw a new wheel on without re-sighting in every time!
Never have made the time....spring is premium to habitat work for deer...this year gonna give it a try a couple times between habitat work, consulting, regular job and travel softball team.
