I have a friend who manages his deer herd very strict. He has a 4 yr old minimum. He finally has given me permission to come up and hunt. He tells me to bring a card reader and pull his game camera card to see what deer have been using this field. This buck is probably 140" and I'm guessing 3 1/2 so not a shooter, but he says if I'm good with it he is good he would be okay for me to shoot. My question is would you shoot or pass? I want to earn his trust because he has some really great deer on his farm and I want to be invited back. He shot a 166" and 150" this year.
Fixed them for you. And for me that deer would be a shooter any day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Great buck but I think he's still young. Shoot if you want and be proud or let him grow a year or 2 more! He's got great potential!
He looks really thin in the first pic. If I had to guess, I'd put him at 3 years old. He's a nice buck that's a tough call.
If your buddy has a strict 4 1/2 year old policy and thinks it is 3 1/2 I would not shoot him. That could end up being your last hunt there.
There are several good ones, but this one has been pretty frequent and post rifle season. He is the only one that is borderline old enough.
Good luck, as hunters we all want to shoot monster bucks I hate that feeling in my gut when you watch a nice buck walk away because you want one bigger.
He is at least 3 1/2. But, I would guess that the reason your buddy is okay with you shooting it is because it does not have the potential that some of his other bucks have. It is basically a big 8 point. If he is anything like me, I have no problem taking out 8 pointers and letting the young 10 pts or better go. If that deer makes you happy, and your buddy has given you the green light, I would say he probably would like for you to take him. Good luck.
When in doubt pass. Show good judgement on this trip and there will be more in the future. I am like you, if that walked by my stand at home, I am shooting. However, it looks 3 and 1/2 to me. I would pass unless your friend specifically give the ok for that deer. Good Luck!
His friend gave him the okay. I am guessing for good reason. Shoot it. He is using you as a management tool and that could lead to bigger and better things. Go for it!
I don't see how this could be a question of earning his trust when he tells you to shoot it? Shoot it!
It would depend. When he gave you the green light did he sound confident in his decision or have to talk himself into giving you the go ahead. How that conversation went would tell me if I had a true green light on that deer or if I should think better of the situation.
He sounded like he was okay with his decision, but he basically said if that deer would make you happy then okay, but then he sent me a picture of a more mature buck and said "this is what I think is coming to that field". I went last night and this is what showed up. I ran out of shooting light.
