Thanks guys. I had a blast sharing another camp with dad. we saw a ton of deer even with it being the first week of muzzleloader in VA and on public land. I saw that 7pt 3 different times, and every time he'd walk away id second guess the decision, but im glad I did, next year, if he survives this year, he could become something nice. Cant wait to get back!
Coop, same here. I was baffled, everything about the shot felt perfect, and I knew I was settled on her shoulder, and to see that happen....I wasn't too happy about it. Only good thing that came from that shot was that there was a 60 degree drop about 200ft down the ridge behind her she could've ended up running down which would've been a brutal drag. She weighed every bit of 160lbs...big ol mountain gal haha
Awesome. That is beautiful area up there. Have never hunted but been around the area quite a bit and went to school not to terribly far. My buddy has a cabin north of there that is right next to George Washington National Forest. The deer are slim pickings there and the hunting is hard , but rewarding. We generally go up for a weekend in Sept/Oct for squirrel hunting. We have had a camera up there for about the last year and the deer numbers around the cabin have seemed to get a bit better but so have the black bear numbers. And its hard to say what the winter will do for those baby deer. i can say i dont envy having to drag a heavy deer up and down those mountains, its work.
Oh yeah. Luckily that first doe ran down the ridge and left me about a 200yd drag to the road you take in. So that was an easy drag and the second doe, after we got her over the hilltop there it was all down hill (thankfully!!). But in years past I have had to drag them straight up those ridges.....it. sucked! haha
Very cool video, haven't hunted the mountains in VA yet this season but heading out towards Lynchburg this weekend.
Good luck! A TON of BIG BIG deer out that way. Im pretty sure the current, or some of the past, VA state records came out of there.
