I was wanting to know if anybody knew some good workouts to make it easier to draw and increase your draw weight. I'm pulling back 60 lb, it's not to much but when I'm out in the cold i feel a little more strain in my back muscles. So that's pretty much it, I would really appreciate the help.
Total Gym has done awesome things for the ease at which I draw. Muscle strength is important but shoulder tendons and flexibility help greatly!
Resistance bands should do the trick if you want something simple and could use anywhere. Just use them in the same motion you would draw. Otherwise hit a gym to work on all of your upper body. Stick with 60 pounds unless you really ramp it up and anything above is easy to draw.
Push ups are all you'll need. Just do them correct or you can do more damage to your shoulder. Do this routine. Onehundredpushup.com All you'll need. Kilboars Hunt Club
in addition to strengthening your upper body would recommend including a couple rotator cuff exercises to keep the shoulder in good shape.
Cameron Haynes BeastMode work out is pretty good. Works everything and has some stretching and sun dials etc.
I use a homemade do-dad similar to this. Bowfit Archery Exerciser Pulling 30# with zero% let-off 20-30 times, and holding 30# at draw for a minute at a time, every night for months will definitely increase your strength. Especially if you can't shoot every night.
I am the Fitness Coordinator for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. I hold a degree in Exercise Science and have been certified with American College of Sports Medicine as Personal Trainer for going 8 years. I am also the the frequent guest of the Dave Elswick Radio Show in central Arkansas, talking about health and fitness, for the past three and half years. I have often thought about putting together a program specifically to train for bowhunting, including answering the original question of this form. Is that something that people would interested in? Heck, if the Bowhunting.com guys were interested, I would even be willing to put it together with them as the official bowhunting.com training program. In the mean time, here is a link to one of the videos from my youtube page that will help address your question. It is primarily for posture improvement, however it will help strengthen the muscles of the upper back used in drawing a bow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX1pFsmQx4Y&list=PLiOdfPLlTPE748-txU_dyMb56Pne7m-NU&index=1
I work shoulders pretty hard once a week. I do front lateral raises, side lateral raises and bent over lateral raises. There are three heads in the deltoids, front mid and rear, these cover all. I also do shrugs for the traps and throw in military press every now and then. The best is shooting often and do stretching often!
Shoot a lot But I use a Bow Trainer because i can't shoot a lot. I like that thing and it works for me. I supplement with dumb bells. RC
Any good strength training program will do wonders. The popular stuff, P90's, T25, etc works your whole body, which is a good thing regardless. I started T25 till I jacked my lower back up doing who knows what. I'll be back on it soon. Something I like to do is to turn up my poundage during the off season. I hunt at 63-64lbs but I'll shoot my bow at 70lbs all winter, spring and summer. Combined with a routine workout its amazing how easy 63 pulls in October... like butter.
I shouldn't lie...I have a knock off version but same exercises. Just for sure mobility, flexibility and joint strength building I love the purchase!
The best exercise for making the bow easier to draw is to flex the wrist in a counterclockwise motion while holding an allen wrench on the bolt that adjusts the draw weight of your bow... What, not the answer you were looking for? Lol.
