So I left work yesterday afternoon to hunt, it was depressing to drive with the wipers on all the way home. I got home and checked the radar and it looked like it was going to stop raining so I showered up. Climbed in the stand at 3:30 and by 4 it was gaining again. I told myself I would stick it out till 4:30. The cabelas guide wear fleece keeps you warm but it is like a sponge in the rain. I had does show up at 4:15 so there went the plan of climbing down I was trapped. Have you ever sat on stand and watched deer shaking the water out of their coat? I was sitting there wonder what the hell am I doing out here, this sucks. The deer were jumpy I was wondering if they were on to me after I climbed down in the dark Sunday night. I was sitting there cold and wet watching the does all with their heads up 7 sets of eyes ready to bust me, all jumpy. I ended up shooting a mature 8 pointer about 5:00, best end to a miserable hunt ever for me.
Congrats on the buck! I got soaked and was cold this morning. After I drew on a nice 8 who sensed something was wrong and left because I was at full draw for too long and began trembling a bit, a few does came in and acted spooked. Taking forever and head bobbing. I wanted to yell at them to leave so I could climb down and get dry.
I'd think that shooting a mature 8 pointer would erase all the memories of the prior "miserable" hours.
Actually as soon as I let the arrow go I was more miserable. I am always anxious until I find the deer.
I don't post pics of trail cam or taken bucks on the internet. I will e-mail or txt a photo if you pm me
Out of sheer curiosity - why not? Congrats on a successful harvest. In the future you should invest in a tree umbrella. IMO they're the greatest invention ever when it comes to hunting in the rain.
Stopped and talked to the taxidermist he is going to come out and skin it for me after I age the deer for 10 days, that is real service. He guessed it is 140 I told him not interested in measurements, plus I think that might be a little high, I am more interested in getting him weighed he is a big bodied buck all bulked up and rutty
Couldnt find mine a little while back so I just bent a black every day umbrella it worked great and gotta a big ole doe Big Brother.. Hey Watch This
Congrats Sota...... Sounds like a really nice outcome to a miserable day..... Way to stick it out on the rain
I don't mean to come off as whining about the weather, normally I won't hunt in the rain. It just seemed like a pointless hunt with the does ready to bust me and watching them shake off the rain, heck even the does seemed miserable. The buck I shot was my biggest ever and I had a guy at work today ask me if I felt more accomplished as a hunter for taking a big buck. I had to think it and be honest I did not because I did not do anything differently than I normally do, the buck showed up and presented a shot and I took it. Heck my grunt call fell to the ground when I first got in the stand, I did nothing but stand up and shoot. Sometimes deer hunting is just plain luck. I feel more accomplished when I sit in a stand and watch does milling around and they don't bust me vs a buck just showing up
