I hunted the weekend and had Monday off. Saw a couple of dink bucks cruising, a few does, that was about it. Monday morning was going to be my last hunt for at least a week, maybe two. Wind was perfect for a great spot I’ve hunted for many years. This spot has gotten thicker, nastier, and better as the years pass. I got settled before daylight, and anxiously waited. Out of nowhere it starts drizzling, slowly coming down harder until it’s pouring rain! This wasn’t in the forecast! Now I’m PO’d, thinking my morning is done. I look into the woods on my left and see a nice 8 pt walking by, I ripped a couple loud grunts, but he can’t hear it through the rain and keeps going. A couple minutes pass, and behind him in the same spot a nice 10 is walking by. I scan behind me I can see a damn BIG deer making his way through a thicket. Is this a dream? What is going on here?! I grunt some more, give a loud snort wheeze, but they all just keep going. Just like that, they’re gone. About 20 minutes go by, and in a thick, little valley right in front of me is a deer making a scrape and rubbing saplings. It’s him, the beast heard my calls, made a huge circle to get downwind. And he’s fired up! He starts heading my way, but taking 5 steps at a time, stopping, looking around. He finally starts making his way up the little hill, I’m drawn back. He gets just high enough to look over the top, still looking for a buck. I don’t know how I kept it together, but made a 20 yard shot through the lungs. He turns and bolts, crashing through the small trees like a bull. By now the clouds have passed, and it’s bright and sunny. I find him dead 70 yards away. He has 14 points, huge bases, and the biggest head and body I have ever seen. If my season was over tomorrow, I would be content. But I still have over 2 months to hunt, another buck tag, and wouldn’t mind bagging another doe. Life is gooooood!
Congrats again, that initial picture while impressive didn't do him justice. Quite a bit bigger than I thought he was.
