My plan up was to take off Friday and hunt Halloween, but the weather keeps getting worse. As of now its looking like 25 mph winds all day. Is it even worth taking off and going hunting. Maybe bank that day for next week?
I went out this past Saturday with the winds 20-30 MPH. I didn't see a single deer and those my husband saw were jumpy and never gave him a shot. We also had some problems with tresspassers that AM - but I think wind makes them too jumpy for a good chance. However, weather changes so quickly. They can say that today and tomorrow they'll say sunshine and calm. I'd just save it for next week - things will only keep improving the next couple weeks.
I was last weekend as well, couldnt count the # of deer i saw, wind howling about 25 mph. No big bucks or giants but a lot of deer regardless. guess its different every day of the week, best of luck folks!
Disagree, the wind may help you. Find a sheltered area where the does will be hiding in windy weather. The bucks will be there pushing them around. Halloween is often one of the best days of the year. And now the wind could help concentrate those deer to sheltered areas and improve your chances. I think it would be silly to miss out on a great opp
I'll be in my tree swinging away. First time I have had the opportunity to hunt on Halloween for 3 years.
Thanks everyone. Tommorrow is suppose to be very favorable weather. I think I might hit the woods in the morning or afternoon. Last year I tried waiting for good weather and got none. I hate hunting in wind. Deer are jumpy and you can't hear anything coming. I don't really have any places to get out of the wind, either.
I will ne in a tree no matter what!!!!!!! I killed a buck last year in the wind of 20 + mph Good luck in whatever you do
There is no doubt I'd miss out on the hunting. I just can't miss out on the Trick-or-Treat with the 3 and 7 year old!!
I will be in a tree Halloween morning, with 15 mph SE winds and lows near 30 degrees. There is something about Halloween that brings out the critters, and hopefully one of the shooter bucks will walk under my stand!
is there really any difference between October 30th and 31st? Are witches and goblins chasing big bucks all over the woods that causes that particular day to be so special?
X2. i hunt thick cover away from fields edges. i actually like a 15+ wind. helps hide YOUR sounds in/out and a cough if one comes on. i sat last night in 30+ and had 6 come by without any worries.
I'm just going to tag out tomorrow. I'll still take friday off, but it will be to take my buck to the taxidermist.
My theory is early November is the peak or start of the rut most areas and the 31st of October is the closest to early November you can get without hitting November. It just happens to be a cool holiday as well that makes it a place/time marker. Not unlike Thanksgiving in a sense, but for a lot Thanksgiving is more of a bonding hunt when family traditionally hit the woods for the first hunts of the season together. Last week of October to third week of November, while I'd love to hit all the holidays give me somewhere in between every time if I had to make a choice. Always take my vacation between the 5th and 17th of Nov.
I've killed two bucks on Halloween... I can't recall any other day I've taken two on a particular day... maybe cause it's Halloween and I can remember it, I don't know... I do know the Drury's list Halloween as one of the very best days afield.
