does anyone esle hunt small game with a bow.

Hey everyone, just seeing how many other guys hunt small game with a bow.

 

Me and my son will shoot squirrels in our yard during our spring season. I say shoot because we look out the window and when we see several out there we'll put on a "stalk". We're not really out in the woods hunting them. They flock to our yard in june to eat those little helicopter thingys that fall off of the maple trees. Our season this spring was May 17th-June 20th which is perfect for the helicopter crop.LOL.

 

I take a different arrow (rather than my deer ones) in the woods when it comes in. If I have a squirrel present a good/close shot I'll attempt it. Can't say I'm successful.

 

I've attempted partridge and Squirrel but not much else, the G5 small game head is awesome!

 

I shot a squirrel a few days ago. Also hunt rabbits, I've tried getting a dove but none will land in a spot where I won't lose my arrow.

 

they have arrows called flu flu arrows they are for game birds. they don't fly far and have huge feathers on them so you can find them.

 

Arent these usually shot with recurve or traditional?

 

Yes I've made a few before. But I was hoping one of the doves would land in front of me while I was deer hunting. I wasn't actually dove hunting. Otherwise I would have brought my flu flus.

 

I keep reminding myself not to shoot squirrels because I don't have a small game license.

I like to attempt hunting small game with a recurve haha. It's tough. Mostly rabbits, and grouse.

 

Like almost everyone else I ATTEMPT to hunt small game with my bow. Never been too successful, just if i see something I'll take a shot to mess around

 

when I was younger I used to shoot stripped gophers but I haven't seen any in my yard for about two years. I might have shot most of them because I was out everyday shooting about two-three a day, the trick to shooting them was to aim two inches in front of the hole so when they ducked you could get them before they got down the hole.

 

Are y'all using small game heads or broadheads? Where are you aiming to hit them? I shot a coon in the head with a SGH from about 10 yds and it really just stunned him

 

I am two for two with squirrels. Took one out of a tree about 5 feet from the bottom. Last year, shot one on the ground about 5 yards away. Perfect head shot. Sometimes I will bring along a field tip in my quiver. Won't use a bh on the small critters. Lol.

 

I shoot rabbits all the time with mine in the winter. I have also been known to shoot a raccoon or two every now and then if I see them while in stand.

 

I guess small game heads are more for squirrels and rabbits.. Not 25 lb coons.. Lol

 

Yep. Everything. Great practice. Groundhogs in the spring and summer, doves and squirrels in late summer/ early fall. Squirrels when I get bored in my stand. Lol. Nothing better for practice than having to hit a small squirrel at 30 yds. Makes any shot on a deer a joke. Lol

I usually take a field tipped arrow on morning hunts to try at a squirrel at the end of my hunt. It's like they know when you bring that arrow though. Hardly ever see any when I'm itching to try to make that shot! Haha

 

I have shot squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks. Even shot a pheasant with a flu flu one year.
