So this has been on my mind for a bit. Mostly curious how everyone else handles shooting yardage in between your pins. So let's say you have typical 20 and 30yd pins setup, and you wind with a deer at like 27yds. Do you gap shoot? Do you aim 20pin high? 30 pin low? What are your strategies and techniques?

Most fast modern bows don't require a lot of compensation. I won't gap shoot. If it's 27 yards I'll just use my 20 and stay a little bit high.

Interesting question,...myself, I tend to split the difference,...below 25 with the 20 pin high, above 25 with the 30 pin low. One thing I do is never practice from the same spot and never practice a shot without my range finder, so I'm not guessing at where my shot "should" land. Works for me anyway.

I need to know, so I practice at those in between distances so I know which pin to use and if I hold high or low.

I don't gap shoot. Just use whatever pin is closest to the range of the animal. Maybe hold a tad lower or higher but not much

That's what's I love about the HHA single pin adjustable site.

If it's, a 22yd or 33yd I dial it in and aim true.

With that said I usually range where I think the deer will be and just plan on holding it high or low if I need to adjust.

I'd use my 28 yard pin. Lol

I set my pins at 22,28,33,38,43

If I don't have time to judge, I put the 22 on top of the kill and 28 on bottom. If I think it's on the high end of that, I lay the first 3 pins on the kill and it's over.

I've used the 5-6 yard pin setting up to 300 fps.

My son is around 270 right now and uses the same thing.

He told me this weekend he loves how this setup works.

Under 20, it automatically compensates for the high aim needed on a stand shot. Aim center 10 at all times.

I've tried single pins and don't like having to adjust it. Some like them, just not me. If a deer is 27 yards. I just aim with my 30. My 20 & 30 yard pins are so close it don't matter too much.

Agreed on the HHA Sight. But in reality I usually keep my HHA single pin at 30 yds. At 20 yds it puts me 3 inches high, which puts me in the middle of the lungs.

X2 with a HHA I set it at 25 yds and can shoot 0-30 pretty close. Anything inside 20 is only a inch or 2 high so I will aim just a hair low on closer shots.

Here is a pretty good representation of trajectory at different speeds.

As you can see,at almost 100 fps, there is only 2 1/2" difference at the highest point of the arc. This was an actual chart I got from someone on AT of how his bow performed.

for my elk set up I shoot 35/45/55/65/75 (Mission Ballistic using a Trophy Ridge Alpha V5.)
w/my 35 yard pin I am 4" high at 20. My 75yd pin is actually about dead on at 72 but is as low as I can get it with the 35yd pin being as high as I can get it.

My whitetail bow is set for 30/40/50 (Mathews Z7 Extreme using a Trophy Ridge V3.) 2" high at 20. I could use the top pin set dead on at 35 and shoot a little higher closer up in order to extend my max distance; but no reason to in any of the woods I hunt. I doubt I would ever need my 50, but you never know what you'll see in the middle of the CRP.

They way I look at it animals will rarely if ever present exactly at 20/30/40 etc. Even if you have a single pin set up, you had better be proficient at either shooting the gap or knowing "if I put my 30 pin right there, I should hit the animal 2" higher at this distance..."

Case in point - shot my cow elk this year at 25 yards. I had a log right behind her ranged at 27. I put my 35 yard pin right at the bottom of her breastline, just behind her elbow. The arrow entered exactly where I wanted - right in her heart.
