Anyone know of any good videos (free preferred but would be worth it to me to buy a good one) on reading maps and hunting big woods? I have no clue on these things and no one local that I know who can teach me. I don't learn well by reading, more visual or hands on. There are videos out like on YouTube, but not sure what ones are good so wanted to ask if anyone here knows of some decent ones somewhere. Thank you in advance.
Not free, but a good watch and has some of what you're talking about. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002E6SNU2?pc_redir=1413930706&robot_redir=1 I would say Hill Country Bucks plus Mapping trophy Bucks would be a great combination for any bow hunter. Mapping Trophy Bucks:Amazon:Books
Here's an image from the back of the hill country DVD. Hope it doesn't load sideways. Been awhile since I have watched it but it is definitely really good watch, has segments on maps, thermals, buck beds and just an all around good watch.
Looks like a lot on YouTube. More hunting related when I put deer at the end of how to read topographical maps. What I found when I was trying was I couldn't get a really good topo for the are I was wanting to hunt. There should be a few threads on here that gri22ly started as a how to read. Been a few years ago so can't remember how far he got into them.

I have seen some on youtube but can't remember how I came about them. If you are hunting the hill country make sure it's about hill country big woods it does make a difference.
Some of it will be hill country, some flatter. Not sure if what we have in PA can be considered mountains and I normally avoid the bigger steeper areas anyway because Im a bit fat haha. But awesome good tip for sure thank you!
Flatter land is hard to do with maps but you can look for pinch points and other land features. With flat land you really have to go look for deer sign, without and topographical features to funnel the deer you'll just have to burn some calories and walk.lol
Who needs video? Get "Mapping Trophy Bucks:Using Topo Maps" by Brad Herndon Its not a video, but is definitely a good read if you want to get into topo
Haha yeah that's been the plan. There are small rolling hills there but not many with any size. Drops off into a swamp which is a defined line where that drop is but otherwise its just rolling hills. Plan to start doing out of state public land hunts though and some areas will be more hilly Im sure, so its a skill I need to learn either way.
I suggest "Mapping Trophy Buck's"...it covers the basics pretty well. Should be enough to get you started, take what learn from that book and run with it. There's a lifetime of learning surrounding topography alone. Good luck and have fun!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYtdASitNxs&list=UUDjS_3WhbdHjrPn29q8R47g It isn't free but i bought his dvd and it is great. Especially will help you out because you are in PA. You should check his stuff out. Great material.
That hill country bucks, it's actually one of a 3 DVD series. There is also one called farmland bucks or something like that. hunting dvd - hunting video - farm country bucks - instructional | NextBuk Outdoors
The farmland buck DVD is pretty worthless, so its really a two DVD set. The two are worth every penny.
