Seen it today on the pursuit channel or outdoor maybe. A guy took a 62 yd shot at an elk. The guy even said I'm not sure where I hit that bull, maybe the neck. It did go down, and they found it. I don't remember where he ended up hitting it. Would any of you take a 62 yd shot?
Only in perfect circumstances, no wind, wide open area, and whatever I'm going for is perfectly calm.
It would probably be close to my limit. They are pretty big though, probably similar to a 40-45 yd shot on a deer?
Shot my Bull Moose Three years ago at 63 yards going up hill! If you practice those distance's, why not make the shot? Speacially the way the guys on here making 70 yard shots and grouping in a pie plate. Big animal like a moose or bull Elk and Bear's are a lot of lungs to hit. Not every one will take the shot but if your able to, why not? Rocky
now more then ever we as bow hunters need to remind others that it are skill that drive ourselves to work hard to get as close to the game we are hunting so we won't all get lumped together in the same woods with rifle hunters one day. Next season in my state will allow x bows during archery season. Boost the tag sales for sure,just not on ground I control.
I would on Elk. Different ball game out there than in the east. Open country and some wide open spaces. When we went elk hunting a few years ago I had practiced relentlessly for a few months at long distances and I was very comfortable with a 60 yard shot. 60 yards may be as close as you can get so you need to be prepared. Matter of fact I still practice to those distances and beyond, just not as relentlessly as I did then.
Like the other guys said, I would on an elk. I practice 60 yards regular and can put 4 arrows in a 5-6 circle pretty regular. Shooting 60 makes those 20 yards shots I take at deer seem ridiculously easy.
Nope... 40 yards at the most for hunting. And yes I practice year round up to 70 yards. If I wanted to take long shots on anything other than a target, I'd use a rifle not a bow.
depends on what... hog, coyote, big game, yes. Shot a coyote at 63 yards once. longest on a deer is 48, I'll shoot deer to 50 but depends on the conditions. If it is windy then I won't shoot but 25 yards.
I've been a 30 or under guy for years despite practicing routinely out to 45/50....finally this year if the deer is calm, clear shot and no to little wind I'll take a 40 yard shot. That is a personal choice though, so no I wouldn't take the shot on elk, moose, deer, or rabbit However, that said I know many a guy who practices out to 80 yards just so they believe a 50 or 60 yard shot is well within their skill range given proper circumstances. It's all about skill+practice+person choice....that formula is different for every hunter.
If I was going elk hunting, you can bet I'd be practicing out to 80-100 yards so that 60 yard shot felt like a 40 yard shot. Elk hunting is a whole different ball game. 60 yards might be your only chance, better be prepared to make that shot if it presents itself.
On an elk, in a heartbeat I would take that shot. I know my limit and the kill zone on an elk is way bigger then my 60 or even 70 yard group.

I wouldn't go elk hunting unless I was comfortable at 60 and beyond with a target of that size. You are really going to limit the number of shots with a 40 yard limitation. And shot opportunities can be and will most likely be few and far between. I think most guides would completely flip out if the present a good shot to you at 50-60 yards and you didn't take it.
