Where do you gut your deer?

Just out of curiosity, where do you gut your deer?

After hunting for 20+ years in the northeast part of the country, we always gutted them where they lay as quickly as possible to get the meat cooled down. Usually gut piles are gone in less than 2-3 days, and we have often killed multiple deer in a short period of time within close proximity of a gut pile.

I've heard differing opinions on this recently since moving out here in IL, and I'm wondering if it's a regional thing in the midwest to transport deer a long ways away from hunting property to gut it. I understand that it will attract predators, but I'm not convinced it affects an area any worse than stinking up an area with human scent from dragging the animal out.

So.....do you gut them where they lay, drag them a little ways, or do you transport the entire deer a long ways away from your hunting property?

 

I hunt where I live but I bring the deer into the well lit air conditioned garage to gut them. Get them clean and cold as fast as possible

 

Right where they lay or withing a few yards....

Sometimes I have to drag it over the property line when I have snuck on another's land

 

Take it out and take pictures then gut on my neighbors property.

 

We have field behind the house that we don't hunt in so we hit all of them there

I usually drag a short distance to someplace that will make gutting easier.

 

Wouldn't say I transport them a long way but I go pick them up and haul them to shed and gut them. Not really so much worried about the gut piles being out in field it's just easier to go grab truck or four wheel and haul them back to house. Not that it's a big concern but that also helps with anything going wrong or contaminating meat, since there a hose right there.

And since do most of my hunting in afternoon the brand new well lit shop on the farm is a heck of alot better them fumbling around with a flashlight or head lamp.

I hunt 4 different properties but they (the other3) are all within 15 miles of the family farm, so I load them up and take them there where I can hang them, have good light, running water, electricity for a saw, etc..

I always skin and quarter at the same time as gutting and then get the meat in a refrigerator used solely for this purpose....well this and beer....

 

95% of the time where they lay. The other times drag them a short distance to where it's convenient. 2 years ago I had two gut piles within 10 yards of each other about 3 hours apart.

Coyotes are the only thing I'll actually drag to another area if they drop in a bad location.

 

Gut them where they lay... Maybe drag them to a field edge. But always close.

I voted drag a short distance but I've also gutted where they lay. It really depends. I always do it out in the woods somewhere.

 

Where they lay gets my vote also. They are much lighter without the guts! ;-)

 

Gut where they die

 

I will haul them out of that area if it's still hot. I've had coyotes scare deer away from my stands messing with day old guts. On the other hand, I gut shoot the coy dogs, so they run far away before dying )

We usually gut them where they fall but after my brother shot a doe last night from the wrong stand , we got it out of there quickly and done it elsewhere .

 

As they lay for us, of course after some trophy pics.

On public land this year my plan is to go gutless, and boneless. I'm gonna debone the meat right from the body so I can pack it out easier
