I did my first European Mount. I boiled the skull 3 seperate times. Problem though: I know for a fact there's a small piece or 2 of meat inside the skull cavity that i just could not get and that the boiling didn't knock loose. Now 2 weeks later, there is undoubtedly a bad smell/aroma coming from the skull. Does anyone have any tips on how to get the last bit of meat? I've read to put it in a plastic bag with a hole so that flies can get in and lay eggs and that the maggots will eat the last bit of meat. Is this a good method? Is there anything else i can do to fix this?
Brains and/or sinus ....Forceps....Air hose also works....in the future you need to get them all out before it dries
I would pour salt into the cavity. It will dry it out. Then I would try leaving it to the bugs if that didn't work
Power washer with a jet stream. Use one that's 1500 psi or so. I clean all my skulls like this and never have any problems.
I break the ear bones out of the skull when i'm done boiling. it allows you easy access to the brain cavity to get the last bit out. you cant see behind it when it's mounted, even if you could, it's hardly noticeable.
next time or re-boil I have done a bunch of them and I boil them for8/ 10 hours and then take the garden house to rinse out the meat that is left inside the skull no problems and has worked every time
I took a power washer 3 or 4 times to it getting every direction imaginable. Really shocked that it's smelling, but know darn well its just from the slightest bit of left over residue. Really wish I knew how to get rid of the last bit
Also, I'm amazed that you boil it for 8 to 10 hours. I boiled 3 times at 1.5 hours each and had it on a simmer, 1 boil here and there for the entire boil of each session and still had the nose start splitting apart now that it's been drying. I wad told I definitely over boiled. How do you boil it for 8 to 10 hours and not have the skull crack and get discontinued as it dries?
I let mine sit in compost for 6 months, it was all full of worms in the brain and sinuses. First sprayed well with H2O from the hose, then sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. The worms let go and fall out with the peroxide. Then hose. Then peroxide again. Then let it sit out in the shed for 2 months.
The proccess that I've found that works the best for me is pretty simple actually. I just pay a guy $40 to do the skull for me. Has worked pretty dang well so far.
I keep the skull under a bucket for at least 2 months then I boil the skull for up to three hours with a crap ton of Borax.
Thinking about buying some beetles and doing them that way. Be a fun project for me and the kids. Anybody ever started a beetle colony before?
If you live near a chicken house you can bury the head and put a bucket over the antlers. You just gotta hope theyll let you put it inside their chicken house. Their are usually tons of those beetles in there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
