Currently dont have a chainsaw and would like to pick one up before hunting season. I know i dont need a $6-700 pro saw but would like something that will hold up. The stihl dealers in the area are most prominent and have dealt with one multiple time. I need a saw for trimming around the house if needed, trimming for trestands, storm clean up, and maybe something that falls acoss a path in the woods. I have been looking and think i am gonna go with stihl but i dont know what model would suit my needs. I have looked for used but they just want to dang much for used saws and when they are good saws and prices they go quick. For those of you in tune with saws what saw would you suggest i look into? I have been to check them out a few times, and husqvarna ( which i wouldnt really be opposed to but only one dealer near by). I wont saw what models i have been looking at so i can see what is recommended. Thanks for the help fellows.
I loved my Stihls before ethanol gas ate them up. I'd recommend them and using pre-mixed non-ethanol gas. I had two 029 Supers and they were great but a hair on the heavy side for small stuff. I have a poulan now, just bought for cheap multi purpose saw but will buy a new Stihl one day in the near future.
I got a husqvarna and it has leaked bar oil since day one and shop worked on it 4 times. Really wished I had bought a stihl like my forestry friends told me.
I got a new to me Stihl MS260 farm boss. Big strong enough to do the job and you can like most saws put different size bars on it to suit your needs. I often go to Pawn shops and found mine for a helluva deal. Just my 2 Cents
Huskavarnas are nice machines imo. After going through 3 Poulans trying to clean a huge brush pile of 1 acre worth of hardwoods, the huskavarna finished the job and many more after.
We had one with the same problem. Don't remember exactly which model though. Stihls have always treated us well.
We run premium in our ATVs and anything with a smaller engine. Even all of our rental boats at camp run premium.
Go with stihl what bar size do you want a good homeowner saw that will take a 18"bar will be the ms 251. I have the older version of this saw the 250 and love it. Have have 3 stihl saws all together but I honestly use the 250 the most. You CANNOT go wrong with a stihl. Oh yeah its one brand we sell at my Deere dealership so feel free to ask any questions.
I have a Stihl Farm boss 290 with a 20" bar.....I have cut down many many trees with it clearing a field for a food plot and it still works flawlessly....I went through 2 bars this bast winter though, but that was my stupidity!!
I own a husky and have bought 3 of them over the years, I liked them because they had compression release before most saws did. I have used stihls for years cutting trees on wildfires both are good saws. Check out e-bay last saw I bought I got free shipping and paid no sales tax on a brand new saw saved $90
I have a stihl ms361 and just love this saw. It is a pro saw but maybe you can find a used one. I use it for the the exact things you mentioned.
