My daughter shot her first deer last night, pretty decent buck. Shot looked great, right in the sweet spot. Buried the bolt to the fletchings. Blood trail is thin. I lost blood last night, searched till 11 or so and had to call it quits. My friend and neighbor as well as my dad have been searching almost all morning. They FINALLY just got back on the blood trail about 150-200 yds from where I lost it last night. They are still working it and I have a tracking dog headed out there now. All this AND I AM STUCK IN MY OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Losing my mind! Hopefully I can sneak out soon. Wish us luck please!
What broadhead was she using? If it is one that usually performs I would be interested in what went wrong with it on this shot, assuming the deer will be found.
I have killed a alot of deer in my life....... witnessing my daughter shoot that buck last night was without a doubt one of the greatest moments of my hunting career, talk about some serious emotion the last 16hrs. I want nothing more right now than to see her sitting behind that dude!!!!
G5 Montec, I don't think anything went wrong per se. The bolt didn't pass through and the angle of the shot created a high entry wound which often = poor blood(shot was less than 10yds from a 12 ft ladder stand). I had the same scenario play out a couple years ago. Zero blood trail found the buck dead almost 3/4 mi away.
My fingers are crossed for you and your daughter!!!! Ill keep refreshing this all day long at my desk (slow day) and cant wait to see the pictures!
Keep us posted!! I don't think there is a worse feeling than having your kids shoot a deer and have a tough track job ahead. They'll find it though!!
Thanks for that info. I also shoot Montecs and I will keep a close eye on their performance. Lack of blood trail can happen with almost any broadhead but long travel distances after a good shot is a bad sign.
Great to hear the good news for your daughter, now go find the buck!! Let us know what happens of course
YES!!! Problem is I am the only manager here today!!! Luckily I have two crafty old timers on the job. I will get out of here soon I hope! I haven't had an update yet..... REALLY starting to worry.....
Fwiw, I've put two montecs into the exit side shoulders of deer. Neither left much blood trail to speak of, and one I spooked too soon after the shot and never found( despite finding the arrow with good blood and 18" of penetration before the broadhead broke off, some how I must have only caught one lung). The other was a heart shot and she was down in 75 yards, but she bled out out almost entirely into the body cavity. I get the impression the tip lodges in that offside shoulder without breaking it, maybe accounting for less external bleeding in certain cases.
