Do you guys ever hunt squirrels in the same woods you deer hunt in? My 10yo son wants to hunt this fall, which I'm stoked about, and I want him to have a successful deer hunt. He also wants to hunt squirrels, w/ a gun in the same 30 acres. Squirrel season just opened, so we've got a month and a half until deer season and I don't want to booger up the woods too bad.

In Illinois the season does not close until Feb 15th. We usually start in around Feb 1st:

I don't...now I have carried a .22 checking cameras in August and maybe early september for those on a platter moments....otherwise like french I'll go some after Christmas if done deer hunting. Otherwise state ground or other properties I don't get to deer hunt on.

I shoot them in my front yard during the spring and early summer. They aren't as big as frenchbritt's though. Here are a couple that I shot this year. squirel.jpg squirrel #4.jpg

Not for ground squirrels. Other fur bearers have seasons.

I have hunted them in the fall for a change of pace. However I have used a bow with small game points or even broadheads (squirrels are tough).

We squirrel hunt the same woods. The woods that we do that is roughly 100 acres. It never messed ours up. Our squirrel adventures are usually mid afternoon.

I don't have kids, but I would take him out hunting for squirrels in same timber if he is pumped up about it. Remember, he might get just as excited about shooting a limit of squirrels as he does getting a deer with a bow. Let him start smaller with a higher success rate and he will want to follow your lead on deer hunting once he is older. That is my take.

I don't think it will screw up the timber that much in regards for your son deer hunting. It might not be as good for you though. I would only stay out if you had a true monster you were going after yourself or for your son. You don't want to take things too seriously with a kid. Just my opinion and how I would handle it if I were in the same situation.

You could always go squirrel hunting on public land if that is a possibility.

I always enjoy polishing up my stalking skills on a few of them in September while out hog hunting. Always a little harder to get a good ranger finder to lock on those little boogers tho.

I don't squirrel hunt during deer season..there is plenty of time after. However, if I had a son/daughter, brother/sister that was new to hunting and wanted to smoke some...I'd start the charcoal :)

I have hunted them in the same woods as I have hunted deer. I hunt public land. I try and not hunt the same specific area. This year will be different. I will be hitting the woods on Saturday for these tree huggers. I will be hunting for deer in a different area, so it should not push the deer. Though, I have never noticed much difference hunting in the same area as where I have deer hunted in the past.
