Just wondering what everyone rattles with? Bag? Synthetic horns? Real bone? Rattle box? If you use real, what size are they?
I've used the pack rack the past two years and have had more success with it than years past using bags, synthitics, and real. But I believe its more about the setup than the sound.
I use a bag . Wood filled on dry days and plastic on rainy days . I do prefer the sound of wood but don't try to use it to many years as the sound dulls with age .
For early season mcg lugI rattle with a set that would score 120 and I soak them in water for a couple of days. CLOSER TO THE RUTT I switch over to a set that'll score 170.The bigger the better during the rutt.Just my 2cents. Rocky
I use an 8 point rack given to me by a friend of my Dad's the first year I hunted with them. I was 12 years old and we were hunting near San Antonio TX. It is probably a 120" rack and the year was 1965. They still work just fine.
Real bone.. matching set of 8 point sheds, soaked only in blood, sweat and tears.... but mostly tears!
Fake antlers from primos. I would love to use some real bones but I don't like to cut antlers from a skull.
I would use real antlers if I had an extra set to use but especially with as little as I rattle I just use the pack rack. It's nice because it's easy to just slip in your pocket
I think on heavily hunted public land in Pa calling and rattling is over done and does more harm than good (just alerts deer to your presence). For that reason I don't rattle where I hunt in Pa. In Ohio I use a rattle bag and have had limited success with it. I think the 4-5 times I rattled last season once a small 8 came to investigate.
I've used the pack rack for awhile... with little luck.. lol found a nice set of matching sheds this year about 120 class... will use those this season.
Decent basket 8 point. Found him floating in a reservoir one morning while fishing and just happen to have a saw.
The last two years I have used the Black Rack, it has worked pretty well. I have called in 3-4 bucks on private, but I rarely rattle on public. Seems to do more harm than good on public.
I feel it might give the bones a more realistic 'live' tone - may or may not. However - I've had bucks charging in after rattling with them.
