Here's #2 on my hit list. BFF (Big F'ing Fork) Not much for eye guards but man is he tall! 7 days and 16 hours till opening day first light!
Great looking blacktail. Keep us posted i cant wait to read some of those live from the stand messages!
#1 is on the left in this pick. He's Crab Claw. #2, BFF, just happens to be on the right in the background. Although the order could change as my dad saw some other's today scouting we don't have on camera. I live about 2 hours away from where I hunt so I don't get as much pre-season scouting in as I would like. This picture was actually taken about 35 yards from our tree stand. Bad part is we haven't gotten another picture of them in the same place in 2 weeks. It's gonna get interesting...
Wow, that's awesome! Just out of curiosity, what's it like to be an archery hunter in Cali? Is there lots of public land? Lots of other hunters? Easy to get permission? I know you're pretty limited on species, but I imagine the country is beautiful and unique.
Actually I'm just starting to get used to the bow hunting here. Bought my first bow in March and hunted turkey. Turkey is pretty good, usually a ton of them running around. There is a fair amount of public land that is huntable however it's a little more fitting to rifle hunt the public land. I wouldn't trust putting up trail cams on public land, they'll get taken either by other hunters or the MJ growers not wanting to be caught on camera. I'm lucky enough to have some family friends that let me hunt their land. I haven't hunted public land in a long time. If you go to the BLM web-site, it will show you areas that are open for public hunting. You just have to be careful because you stand a pretty good chance walking into a MJ field if you aren't paying attention to where you're going. And if you stumble on one, you sure as hell want more than a bow with you. I thought the bucks were gonna be a little harder to find this year but I got a call last night there are about 3 more good ones in our area we haven't got on camera yet so things are starting to look up. I'll keep ya posted. U.S. Bureau of Land Management in California - America's Great Outdoors
I had to look up where Lemoore is. Not sure about deer down in So. Cal. but I know there's some good desert sheep hunting available. I'm gonna have to look into doing that. Now you got the wheels turning. Thanks!
When I heard where I was going I had to look it up also. Pigs is what I wanted to try. Just never got the time off to go.
The blacktail in my area are smaller. Weather is warmer and they don't pack on the body mass for winter conditions here. Antlers might be a bit taller but the blacktails in my area don't have the antler mass either. Their range is pretty wide all the way up into Washington and into parts of Canada. Up there, they are probaly very similar in size. Antlers can vary a lot too depending on if they've got some mule deer in them too. Looking at a range map it shows mule deer all the way into my area however I can't say I've seen a true mule deer around. At least not like in CO or WY that's for sure. Not sure if that totally answers it but that's my best shot. Either way, a good buck always looks good on a wall!
Im very curious about hunting in cali, I always had some pretty hefty misconceptions about it. Have you run into any trouble? What are the huntable species? Do you do any upland or waterfowl? What part of the state are you in? My ladyfriend just moved from mn to san diego to go to law school. She wants me to come out there, but i need to be in a place that i can hunt multiple species of tasty critters lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
