Was out glassing a field near my house in northeast Illinois the other night and noticed this little guy not far from my truck. I have never seen one of these in all the years in this area. Looks like a prairie dog but thinking it's a groundhog.
I've actually been getting a lot of pictures this summer of those. In one spot especially, pretty sure it's a ground hog. See them every once in awhile around here. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk
Ground hog also known as woodchuck. I was wondering if you guys had them around here, they are all over the place in NY and PA. I'm guessing I've killed at least a thousand if them when I was a kid, my dad used to pay me $5 for every one I killed on our horse pastures.
Thanks for the clarification! Don't think you will see to many if you see any at all Matt. Like I said this is the first one that I have ever seen in all my years up here. Your not that far from me so can't imagine the population of them would me much different 30 minutes away.
I used to see them all over in ne illinois. Hay fields, field edges, sides of the road. My mom had them in her backyard in Wheeling.
Prairie Dog, other wise known as a gopher, great distance practise for judging distance on these dogs. Usally where there is one there s 20 more not far away. Brutal for cattle farmers, they make holes big enough for cattle to step in and break ankles. Kill every one you can. There canibales also will eat one another when numbers are up and feed is down. Rocky
I can't believe that I have never seen them being that close to Wheeling. Maybe I have and just never noticed.
Groundhogs are all over the place here. I guess I need to get out more because I thought they were common throughout North America.
It's a groundhog, and IMO the best summer practice critter. If you have never had the opportunity to go out and get a few of these little buggers with your bow and friends, you are missing out. It really is a blast, and it will test your stalking skills and shot placement.
When I was a kid they were all over the place around here. The last 10 years or so I see maybe 1 or 2 each summer as I'm driving around. Not sure if coyotes ate them all or what happened.
Ya it's a groundhog, I've already taking two out this year. They destroy my wife's vegetable gardens and have done hundreds of dollars of property damage. I wish they would disappear from P.A.
growing up in northern Indiana woodchucks were everywhere; don't see near as many here in northern Illinois. I was thinking the same thing regarding coyotes. Rabbits too- hardly see them out in the field anymore, although they are all over my neighborhood...might explain the pack of coyotes running around my subdivision.
