Do you consider killing any deer with the following weapons a trophy?
Do you consider killing any deer with the following weapons an accomplishment?
Do you consider killing any deer with the following weapons as a dime a dozen (easy)?

Consider everything else being equal (i.e. age of hunter, quality land access, deer populations, etc).

    Rifle/Shotgun:

    Trophy -
    Accomplishment –
    Dime a dozen -

    Handgun:

    Trophy -
    Accomplishment –
    Dime a dozen -

    Muzzleloader:

    Trophy -
    Accomplishment –
    Dime a dozen -

    Crossbow:

    Trophy -
    Accomplishment -
    Dime a dozen -

    Compound Bow:

    Trophy -
    Accomplishment –
    Dime a dozen -

    Traditional Bow:

    Trophy -
    Accomplishment –
    Dime a dozen -

Anyone can kill a fawn or young deer with any of those things on a given day provided the deer makes a mistake. If you changed "any deer" with "mature doe" or "mature buck" I might think differently, but just any deer is just an accomplishment. Practicing with each of those weapons to be proficient can be done, hunting deer in itself is the challenge, not the tool used to kill them. Just my opinion.

If this thread takes off I plan on asking the same question about any mature deer.

Why do we as hunters have to judge everything? I honestly don't care how anyone answers these questions. Go out, enjoy the outdoors, enjoy the hunt and be satisfied with what weapon you choose to take afield.

Main reason I stated accomplishment for everything, because honestly trophy or not is always no matter what gonna be an opinion but an accomplishment is a no doubter and no matter style the goal of every hunter! Legal, go wild :)

    Touche.

Am I going to let any answers bother me or change my mind? Not at all. I do find it interesting hearing other people’s perspectives about how they perceive those weapons.

If this was a topic about how one would view their own kills with each weapon, I would jump on board. Unfortunately, it's how people view other's kills.

Everything is an accomplishment, you accomplished in killing a deer. Trophy, sure if you mount it. Dime a dozen, "easiness" is all relative, as long as you enjoy the experience I think it's all that matters. And of course the meat, can't forget the meat!

My intent was not really to make it about everyone else's kills. Just a general perception of a kill with a certain weapon whether it be your own or somebodies else’s kill.

I didn't clarify, I realize that wasn't your intent. But, it's the result.

To answer the original question, the older I get the less lightly I take killing of any animals. No matter the weapon, I feel taking any deer is an accomplishment that shouldn't be taken for granted, no mater what's on the deer's head.

Don't you get the feeling that some "elite" hunters take seeing deer for granted? One term that drives me bonkers is "just a doe".

Doe – with all weapons would be considered an accomplishment, but not a trophy.
    Yearlings – forget about it.
Immature Bucks – forget about it.
Mature Bucks – I would roughly align with Boone & Crockett & Pope & Young for trophies. All taken are an accomplishment, but would scrutinize the trophy level:
Crossbow – Boone & Crockett Minimum
Compound Bow – Pope & Young Minimum
Muzzleloader - Boone & Crockett Minimum
Rifle, Handgun & Shotgun - Boone & Crockett Minimum
Longbow & Recurve – Pope & Young Minimum

The only weapon listed that I have not taken a deer with , is the traditional equipment so I only assume that this is how I would see it .
All of my answers are based on mature deer as I wouldn't shoot just any animal . For myself , the taking of any fawn - 2.5 year old deer would be a "dime a dozen" but I have been hunting a lot of years . I am always excited for any other hunter that harvests a legal deer ..... well , except for the hunters that think they need to explain why they shot a young deer . Those guys kind of tick me off , we all know they were excited when they shot .... so why downplay it with an explanation .
