New to archery, been hunting with a rifle up until this season Deer season is coming & I've got tags & decided to buy a bear tag in case i find one while deer hunting Then I got to thinking about the logistics of shooting an enormous pissed off bear with a leetle teeny pointy stick and now I'm kinda scared to. I know it's been done before so can anyone give me advice how to kill one before it gets it's paws on me?
1) if you're hunting out if a stand you're fine. I've shot a bear with a shotgun and in my experience he was more interested in getting the heck out of there instead if investigating the source of his wound. 2) don't use a leetle teeny stick. Get a nice heavy arrow with a good solid fixed blade. 3) shot placement, shot placement, shot placement. Oh and did I mention shot placement? As long as you do you're part and put it where it needs to go you're fine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I say tiny stick because in comparison to an injured bear, an arrow doesn't look like much. But, thats just me underestimating the lethality of an arrow. I'll be using the same arrows & broad heads I have for deer if I do run across one. Should I have something different? & I won't be in a stand, unfortunately. The area I'm hunting is a hike in & stalk place. The thought of injuring a bear in range of my arrow & on level ground with me scares me a bit The goal here is to build your rig stronger than you are stupid.
I'm not sure if your deer set up and I'm assuming it's black bear you're referring to, but I will say don't go a touch under 450 grains finished weight for an arrow. Heavier is always better. So it may be time to up your deer set up as well and that could never hurt. And if you put an arrow through the pump station that bear will go down. An arrow in the right spot is very lethal. Most bad encounters happen after the shot during the recovery. Give the animal time to pass! Make sure the bear is dead if you are going to try to recover the animal in the twilight or after dark. Shoot one in the evening and don't hear a death moan you MUST wait until the next morning to make the recovery.
Very good advice. Forgot to add that. I put a slug through my bears lung and liver and had to put another in him during the recovery (shot him at 6, put a follow up shot in him at around 8:30) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree with above, and another idea is pending your laws carry a good pistol. I got my carry permit so I can have it with me if needed. Way more than likely won't ever need, but can't say it doesn't add an extra sense of security. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The last three bears I've shot with a bow have gone probably all totaled up less then 150 yards total between all three before they died. An arrow through the pump house is very effective!
Get really good at figuring out the vital locations and know where to aim. Plus packing in a good pistol isn't a bad idea either. Something with a fairly large, heavy bullet. .357 flat point or soft point would work pretty well I imagine.
