I just saw this video and its crazy. But as a bow hunter it bugs the crap out of me. He could have waited for him to turn.

Had I seen the video a year ago, I would have agreed with you. Since then, I have heard numerous, well-educated and downright good elk hunters tell me that a head-on shot on elk is a PREFERRED shot. Growing up a whitetail hunter, it never would have crossed my mind but it all makes sense after hearing some of their stories.

The kid did not get lucky, he took one of the best up close shots an elk hunter can get. Congrats to him!

What was he aiming for? But the jugular?

I've sen the shot taken but it was for the heart. Not sure what the kid was aiming for hence. Lucky shot.

Everything. When I take a frontal shot it's for the top of the heart. I say the kid possibly cut the jugular and continued into the far side of the heart/lung. Granted, this shot was angling slightly more than I would like for a true frontal shot.

It was a little high. I still feel that he likely caught the off lung, top end of the heart, and the Jugular (obviously). Your welcome for the Fred back;)

It's hard to tell from the video because the bull straightens up for much after the shot, It's hard to tell what angle that arrow could be.

In his current position I would be aiming about 4-5" low of the arrow.

Think of looking at that top of the heart, not a cross section but invert ...as the animal is on all fours.

That shot took out first the Aorta and then the superior vena cava.
From the amount of blood loose your witnessing the elk going into almost instantaneous hypovolemic shock.

I would be curious to see the heart after math for the sake of learning.
