What Knife?

New to field cleaning and not sure what knife to get. What shape should the knife be?

Is this a good choice:

I used a simple Case pocket knife to completely process a doe this morning.

 

I hear great things about Havalon knives. I'm hoping to pick one up soon!

 

i have a Buck 119 and it works great. i have used a SOG seal pup to help clean a moose too. anything with a sharp edge will git r' done

 

I have the Outdoor Edge Butcher Lite kit. It's a nice little package and relatively inexpensive for what you get. Has all of the tools needed for a beginner to be comfortable.

You can't beat those kits. I love em.

 

As long as it's sharp and holds an edge....I don't care if it's a $5 knife. I saw the knives in the Mathews show video and looked at their site..they are pretty but too pretty and too expensive at $400 up to totally ludicrous prices for anything useful. Nice gift for the hunter that has everything and is hard to impress.

I bought a pair of Buckmaster knives at walmart for around $20 that are simple and bulletproof that work just fine.

 

I'm going to pick up a Havalon before next season. I don't think I have read or heard anything bad about Havalon knives.

 

The knife you use is of little importance, but having a folding saw to easily cut through the breast bone is a must for me. Gutting a deer is so much easier and cleaner if you can split them open. Young deer are easy enough to cut through with just a knife, but mature deer really make you see the value of a good saw blade. Most any knife blade will stay sharp for the 5 minutes you will be using it to gut the deer.

 

Outdoor edge has a knife that has replaceable blades like the havalon but to me looks a lot sturdier

I have a buck knife and like it. Has good steel. Also have havalon knife. Very sharp. New ones are supposed to have sturdier blades. Havalon is nice for size and weight.

Outdoor edge knife butcher set is also nice. Might be a good idea depending on what you are doing.

If you are just field dressing the deer any sharp knife will do.

If you know how to use the knife, the havalon having thin blades is of little importance.... They only break when you apply torque to them by twisting as you cut. Don't do that. They are surgically sharp for a reason. You don't need to twist and pry as you cut. We completely skinned, quartered and butchered 2 mature caribou bulls in August with 3 blades. I've done deer on several occasions with just one blade. My two pirantas and 100 pack of blades should theoretically last me another 40+ years.

 

I have all kinds of great knives from $5 to $150. They all work

But since getting a Havalon..... I haven't picked up another knife

 

Havalon Piranta works for me. Light, scalpel sharp and has replaceable blades.
