As i was sitting in the stand all today freezing my tail off, i wandered to myself, wonder what other guys do to stay warm on cold days?? It seems like no matter how I dress, I always get cold on them cold days. My normal outfit consists of : a scent-blocker baselayer and the Scent Blocker Triple Threat pants and jacket. What do you guys wear to stay warm on them cold days?
The key is not to sweat on the way in. This morning it was 14* here i had.. -UA tops and bottoms -sweat pants and hoodie - scent blocker fleece jacket/pants
I dress minimally going in and climbing up the tree. I never wear my jacket on my way in and put it on once im settled in and cooled off. Maybe I just need to man up hah
I pack as many clothes in as I can. Generally a hoodie and my fleece jacket. I wear UA base layers, with thermals on top of that. If it's still cold out I layer up with a pair of sweatpants and a fleece vest. My Predator Fleece suit is crazy warm as well.
I was out 2day and it was 19f my layers are- Scent blocker base layer Fruit of loom white thermals Rocky thermals low activity (Walmart) Onyx x system thermals low activity (bass pro ) Scent blocker jacket and pants and I was just nice, well except my toes. After all that I still have 100% full range of movement
It's all about layering your clothes correctly. You need a good wicking layer as your base, I prefer merino wool. Next you will need and insulation layer (or 2). For this I really like fleece. Sometimes I will add a vest into this. Lastly, you need an external hard layer that is either waterproof, windproof, etc.. or both!
long underwear t-shirt and pants flannel shirt or jacket coveralls and normally gloves. feet wool socks and insulated boots hat
i picked up the Rocky fleece thermals last year at wal mart... the things are warm. My feet get cold not matter what.. my hands get cold but i generally put them inside my bibs or take a hand muff. Bottom: UA and then the Rocky Thermals, Carhardtt uninsulated bibs. Top: UA long sleeve (not Thermal), long sleeve shirt and/or thermal, Hoodie, and Core4element rain jacket (fairly quiet and comfortable). The rain jacket isnt very warm but it holds heat ok and keeps the wind off me and is quiet. If it gets colder then i will throw a pair of insulated bibs on over top and switch to a Carhardtt Jacket.
UA basecamp 4.0 base layer. Best money I have spent on any hunting clothing, got it on sale for 40% off black friday shopping a couple years ago.
Clarity: Not a fan of wal-mart for my hunting needs regardless of price point. I prefer to support other sources..personally.
UA base layers have saved my butt countless times when it comes to sitting out in the cold. The only camo bottoms I have are UA early season pants which are made for early season weather. I have the UA 1.0 base layer (closest to the skin) and the UA 3.0 cold weather base layer. This combo has made 30 degree days bearable but I can imagine if you're smart enough to get an actual cold weather outer layer, you should be fine with that set up. I really need to get some Sitka purchased for this time of year. I also want to throw in that I HATE the cold, but Im still comfortable enough with those layers.
I wear the 1.0/3.0 combo with the Kelvin vest and Stratus jacket. Bottom has the same base, but with Cabelas Fleece pants and Stratus bibs. My lower half was fine on Saturday when temps wer in the 20s, but I still need something else up top. I'm thinking a merino wool mid layer.
1-2 pairs of basic Wally World / BPS thermals + predator fleece jacket and pants, light gloves, fleece beanie, hand pouch w/ handwarmers. My feet don't really get cold.
Right there has been my best move in the last two years. I wear thin UA gloves all season so as to no interfere with my shot, but the pouch with handwarmers in it is great to keep them warm. Now if I could just figure out a legitimate system for my feet, I would be golden.
