So, I just finished watching WKP's Great Divide (Awesome BTW). I was very intrigued by the idea of making a horizontal rub post.

Anyone done this before? How'd it work for you? Post pics if you've got them, videos even better! :tu:

Here's an example of what I'm talking about (around the 2:35 mark)

Hence the word horizontal instead of vertical..My bad..Looks interesting may have to give it a shot.

I've been tempted to try them out too. Once I get my stands finalized for the year, I may decide to put one of these up

I have seen them use them attached to trees but that is the first time I saw them use a rope.

I'm going to put some in place next weekend using white pine branches like The Godfather suggests, seem interesting. Works for him. I plan to do a horizontal rub combined with a scrape. I like trying new things!

Waiting two weeks until I move into the new house before I put mine up. Obviously Ted Miller is on an extremely target rich property so that these deer can use them frequently and warn the small bucks off, so I'm not expecting the same results. Biggest thing I've noticed is to leave the horizontal branch loose so that it moves like a tree. Hope to have one built within a few weeks though with a mock scrap close by also.

Man, those are some monsters! Good video. I've got to try that some time. Going to look at my food plots today, and I might set some of those up.

    Bump!

Just heard about these recently. What kind of wood would produce the best results? I am thinking cedar maybe?

I'm planning to do a couple of them along with a couple rope "licking branches" behind my house this year.

I guess I don't understand. What is the purpose for creating these horizontal rubbing posts?

It's to create a spot not much different than a scrape. The horizontal rub is believed to be preferred by bucks to rub over a vertical rub, combine that with a scrape deer have a rub post and scrape at the same site to scent check for other bucks and does. I think to kill a good buck off something like this outside a chance encouter during the rut it better be close to buck bedding with good access routes.

I never had much success with the rub I put out. Only had one year and a half old use it. I typically don't have much luck with scrapes up here either. I'd like to say that it's the deer up here, but it's much more likely that I suck as a hunter :tu:
