Went out this morning and only saw a doe with two yearlings with her. They circled me all morning long, but never came in close enough.

Went back out this afternoon and set up in the same spot, ground blind at the edge of a bean field with timber sloping down to the river behind me. I set out a doe decoy about 20 yards from the blind and waited. Around 4:30 I heard quite a bit of racket behind me, then a 7 point stepped out of the timber 10 yards from my blind. He was interested in the decoy, and pretty much ignored my blind. He slowly made his way towards the decoy, then stopped right in the "blind spot" of my blind, maybe 15 yards out. I figured that would be a good time to draw. After eyeing the decoy for a minute or so, he turned and gave me a perfect broadside shot. I hit him a little low, and he ran to the other side of the field, maybe 50 yards, then he stood there for a few minutes licking his wound. He then walked off out of sight.

The spot where he stood had a pretty good puddle of blood, and the trail was obvious. He dropped down towards the river, then back up on top where he laid down in some scrubby cedars, and he never got back up.

When I cleaned him, I noticed one artery coming out of the heart was completely severed. Good enough for me. Not the best shot, but he'll be burger and salami in a few days. 150 lbs, small rack. :-) Will post pics soon.

Congrats on a successful hunt and a first buck. Looking forward to the pics. My first deer with the bow was a doe on 9/21/12 and have yet to get another. Hopefully I'll put a tag on a buck this year and some more does aswell. :) congrats again
