The last FOUR times I have been able to sneak out and sit in a stand the winds have been 20+ mph. I am able to get out again this evening and guess what, 25+ mph winds. I absolutely HATE hunting in those conditions, but with a new baby I have to get out when I can (actually got a deer last time out in these winds, but I still dont like it). At least I am able to get out tomorrow and the winds should be calmer and a LOT colder.
Let's see; you have a new baby and you got a critter last time out. Maybe you should toss one of those bones my way.
I know what you are saying. I hate wind! Two years ago every time I went hunting to rained and then I decided that I was going to take a different approach. Last year a took a week off to concentrate on bow hunting. I figured if the weather was bad for a day or two I still had 7 more days to hunt. It worked out well, except for the fact that I didnt come home with a deer. haha Stick with it and eventually the weather will be nice.
I hate the wind too, so I just bought a wind stopper berber fleece hooded sweatshirt from Cabelas on a great sale, and got a wind stopper hood on sale too. They are awesome! It is amazing how much more comfortable it is without having a cold wind on your face, head, and neck! Last year I got wind stopper bibs. It makes hunting in the wind MUCH more bearable
Oh Im still going, its just that windy conditions are my least favorite weather situation to hunt in. I despise it (even though it beats being at the office). Touche
If I waited for the conditions I like my freezer would be empty most seasons.I hate real cold weather, but we all know how much it helps our chances.I feel what your saying, the baby situation I've never known but other demands that keep me out on the better days I want to go I understand.Vent you have, now as has been stated gently by others, butter cup get back in the saddle and face the wind with a smile.Use it to your advantage.
So..... I guess I should clean the sand out and shut up Im tired (see: newborn) I just wanted to whine
I feel your pain. Here in Texas the temps have been in the 80s all month with the exception of the second weekend of the season. We are expecting a serious cold front today that will give us lows in the 30s and highs in the upper 50s for this weekend. I can't wait! Finally some bowhunting weather!
Txjourneyman, where have you been? I was just thinking about not seeing you on here for a long time. I hope all is well and the whitetail woods treat you well. Brett
I like windy day hunting. I stick to bigger trees, preferably with limbs because I don't like swaying around too much. Two big advantages are #1, with the tree tops moving, the deer don't pick up movement very well and #2 the wind is usually more predictable and it doesn't settle under your stand. It also usually keeps skeeters away. Of course there are certainly limits.
Just been busy as heck and spending time on a Texas forum. The woods are treating me as well as I'll let them. Which isn't so good. I shot a doe in her backstrap about 3 hours after I lost a turkey last week. I choked pure and simple. That hasn't happened in a while. Anyway, I got to missing this place and thought it was time to show back up.
Ok, so all you guys giving me crap yesterday I went out and enjoyed myself. I went to a new stand that I havent hunted yet and boy, that tree wasnt near as big around as I thought, I was on a roller coaster! Oh, it also rained.....hard, but with that rain came a 17 degree temp drop in 5 minutes. I am not exagerating, it dropped 17 degrees in 5 minutes. I saw 5 does and two 120" bucks.....grunting......chasing.....pretty hard. I was cold, wet and uncomfortable......and I loved every minute.:D
