Do you guys also hear this sound around you. I've never seen a deer when this sound was heard so not absolutely certain it's a sound deer make. I've never seen any videos when they make this sound, nor have I found any links to the sounds. Is this sound simply a communication? Is it some type of warning? Is there anything on the market that simulates this sound?

Never heard a deer "click"... but turkey's will give a high-pitched "cluck" as a form of communication (that doesn't work into your favor, usually). That's my guess. ...or BIGFOOT :moose:

Found this excerpt on a website:

"The Tending Click is a clicking sound bucks may make when looking for or following estrus does. It sounds like someone slowly running a fingernail across the teeth of a comb. It appears to be a slow, drawn-out version of the Tending Grunt." (from -- http://www.trmichels.com/WhitetailCommunication.htm)

I have never heard a deer make a "click" sound....

The beginning of this is what is referred to as "clicking"...

Rage Grunts [IMG]: This is the sound that a buck makes during the courtship when the doe stops running , but won't let the buck breed her. It's a non aggressive and frustration call by him.

Here's a video of a decent IL 9 point, ended up being a broken 10. Later that week I had him at 20 yards and let him walk... I studied him as he hooked a tree... not sure I regret it yet or not...LOL Anyway, in the video I social grunt, click, bawl, sniff wheeze, click some more... and it's not until I throw him a social bleat that he came running from about 125 yards to within 60... he did come in down wind but one never knows when it comes to calling, sometimes it works, sometimes they just ignore but it's worth a try when they stand out of bow range. I considered this very successful.

If a buck makes that noise, I doubt you'll be able to entice him your way. He'll be reluctant to leave his doe. The only thing I can think of that might work would be a snort-wheeze to challenge him.

I have only heard the "clicking" one time. I've never heard a snort-wheeze. That's interesting stuff though!

I have heard it before. When I worked a a sport shop around 1980 we sold a cassette tape call with this sound. We did not sell many. I have heard it many times since then.

I've hunted in Michigan all my life. First time hunting in Tennessee and I had 5 doe/fawns come in under my tree stand. I heard several clicking sounds that I could best describe as sounding similar to a dolphin click. This continued the entire time they were there. I have never heard deer make this sound until now. This was prior to the rut and no bucks around...so not just a buck "tending" vocalization. Possibly just a sound to comfort/calm the group?
Will definitely take my phone out on the next huntand (hopefully) record them if I hear it again!
