There's been a fair amount of talk lately on speed as it pertains to archery and bow hunting. Of course many people are speed freaks and want to have the fastest bow in the world and shoot the lightest arrows, while others are happier with a smooth drawing bow and a heavier arrow that packs a punch. So with that said - for those of you who have legitimately run your setup through a chrono what type of speeds are you seeing? Please list your setup as well - Bow, Draw Length, Draw Weight, and Total Arrow Weight if you know it. Let's see what you got! I haven't run mine through the chrono yet, but plan on doing so within a week so I'll post my results when I have them.
i'll have to check back with my records at home but when i was shooting league in MN a few years back this is what i was pushing mathews switchback LD 75# DW 32" DL Beman ICS Hunter 340 grain add 100 grains for the BH/field point = ~ 440 grains was just under 295fps virtually same set-up now except for some string creepage i'm sure
Out of my SWATs 31" Draw, 62 pounds, 437 grain arrow, 280ish FPS. I've really liked a faster bow in the past, but have found my sweet spot with these bows, it's a great blend. Previously I was shooting the same setup out of other bows in the 295-300 FPS range, but had compromised on draw cycle a bit. It's all about what works for the individual archer.
yep the LD helps the KE and thats is where its at.... i blame my folks =-) but a new bow only comes out every 3 yrs.......
LOL. Yeah, being able to get the same speed out of my setups at 6-8 pounds less draw than others makes me smile.
Out of my Allegiance 66lbs, 28" Gold Tip Pro's 370gr +- I was getting 285ish last season. Plenty fast enough for the deer in my area. ;-)
Here is the formula for determining Kinetic Energy; velocity x velocity x total arrow weight (in grains) divided by 450,240
2001 Martin X-200, 52#'s, 28 inches, close to 530 grains total arrow weight. From all my calculations based on arrow ballistics programs I would say I am shooting between 170-180 fps. This year I believe I am going to buy some aluminum arrows, full length with a stiffer spine and will bump up the tip weight to bring the spine back into range. I believe my total arrow weight should increase another 100 grains or to around 630 total grains. That should quiet my bow and give me some serious penetration.
Just goping from memory on last years set up. Captain @ 63#/30" draw length Easton FMJ @ 480 gr Around 260 fps Haven't sent one through a crony out of the new ez7 yet.
My 04' hoyt vipertech is shooting a whopping 272fps. But it's getting the job done putting mature animals down one after another. My set up consist of 27 1/2" draw length, 60lbs draw weight. I'm shooting carbon express 250 maxima hunters with 100 grain field points.
Something doesn't seem right here. The Katera has an IBO of 330 fps. With those specs I'd think you would be well over 300, no? You're only an inch shorter and 10 grains heavier than IBO ratings are measured at, and you're 2 lbs heavier on the draw length.
I don't remember exact numbers but I was getting about 210 fps with my Equalizer, 26" draw, 41lb #s. 368 gr arrow. Virginiashadow, I'd be surprised if you were only getting 170 fps. I could get about that with my Browning Nomad that was 47# @ 28" and I only drew it about 25". My arrows were fairly heavy too. (over 400 gr) When my buddies would shoot it (drawing it more than 28", they got 210 on the chrono!)
Justin i think the XL model is only rated for 320fps. I could also be wrong on the arrow weight. 28" at 8.2 plus 100 grain heads. i just guessed at the weights of the rest of the arrow components so i could be off there. The only other things i could think of would be that i had three year old strings on it so stretch could have come into play (i don't know if that would slow it down) or the chrono could have been off.
