first, I think the genetic findings are awesome and I hope other species also evolve to become more resistant to the disease. I wonder if they could isolate/replicate the gene that is resistant and then splice that into more elk and even other species to speed the evolution of the resistance process up. Not so much a fan of the "reduced hunting" part; but if subsequent generations can hunt elk because I was only allowed X number of tags in my lifetime; then I'm OK w/ that. Second, does anyone else get completely creeped out by the entire concept of what exactly causes the disease? Prions? Described in this story as a "non living protein that inhabits the ground". Gives me the heebie jeebies every time I read or think about it. If it's "non-living" then how does it replicate/reproduce? It's like a zombie infestation. Just plain scary.
