I wanna get non-res tags for KS and make the trip during your archery season! Any suggestions on public land with good birds available?

Just about anywhere in the eastern third of the state is gonna be loaded with birds this year. They are everywhere! Even the old timers are saying stuff like, "I can't believe all the turkeys I'm seeing." So it going to be a great year here....hopefully the birds cooperate. I live in Woodson county and hunt private ground only, but there is some incredible state ground south of a town called Yates center near lake fagan (aka Woodson county state lake). It sees no pressure during the bow season and minimal during gun. I called up a really nice Tom for a buddy over there last spring. We had 5 different birds gobbling birds at one point. I highly recommend that spot. Let me know if you wind up in the area.

Checking in. May 3rd here in PA. I'm running and gunning for the first bird (shotgun), then I'm going after them with my bow with the second tag.

I will most likely be going to that spot then, thanks for the tip man! I will let you know what days I'll be there when I get it all lined out.

What is the name of the state land?

Look up Woodson county state lake. I forget the exact name of the land, but it borders the entire lake. I think it's close to 4,000 acres.

    Thanks Dubbya.

    Check in.

Nice to meet you guys. I'm from Northern California. I'll be hunting 400 private acres my family owns from a ground blind setup near roosting trees on the side of a small mountain. They come down and scratch up cow patties in the morning so I'm all setup and ready for the weekend after work.

Good luck to everybody and I'll be back posting up my bird soon!

    Mike

Well I hate myself right now. I've never wounded an animal before in my bowhunting career and it happened today. I guess I caught strutter fever. I called in a beautiful Tom this morning right around 8:15 and he gave me a beautiful broadside 12 yard shot. I put the pin on his wing notch and squeezed and recovered a breast meat and feather filled killzone. I searched that whole side of the ranch and jumped him once. He flew off looking fairly healthy. I can only hope he lives to be hunted another day ....not a great start to 2014 for me. Obviously I hit too far into the breast. I shot him while he was in full strut, should I have waited for him to put the feathers down?

Well crap. After looking at the rules and scoring I found out I made a mistake. I forgot that I need to be in the picture of the turkey with my crossbow. I have one pic of the bird with the bow and another of me with the bird but not all together. Guess I'll have to go get another next weekend.
